For some strange reason I've picked now, of all times, to learn to cook. Or more specifically, bake. I make no sense, but there you have it. Kate McDonald, domestic goddess. Eat your heart out Nigella Lawson.
I decided to start out with the most complicated cookies ever, chocolate espresso snowcaps. Estimated time to make 1 hr 45 min, (only 15 min of which is baking time, the rest is prep, they're that complicated. Alas, it took me more like 2 hr 15 min, since I beat the things by hand only to be informed afterwards by
avionflew that we have an electric mixer that had never even been taken out of the box. Damn. I ended up spending a good portion of the evening covered up to my elbows in melted chocolate. Very messy and not as fun as it sounds. Also, the bottoms were a little singed, but that happens even to competent bakers. I'm told by independant sources that said cookies are actually edible, despite being a little bit burnt. Go me! (These cookies were a trial run for Christmas cookies for
katylyn's shindig. Next time I won't burn them!)
Decided to go all out for the stereotypical girliness by choosing for chocolate cookie-baking entertainment the Victoria's Secret fashion show, as hosted by Justin Timberlake. (Apparently it gets televised!) It didn't make me want to buy any of their lingerie, but I totally want a pair of those giant Vegas Showgirl angel wings to wear to holiday parties!
All in all, baking, thumbs up! But next time I think I'll stick to shortbread.
