"Given that every lace is marvelous, among the most exciting are the Flemish,
or Belgian hand-made bobbin laces. Rococo bobbin lace ranks with this group.
A member of the Bruges flower work (or Bruges Bloemwerk) family, it is not
considered a minor lace, although Rococo may be less well documented than
others.
Its origins remain somewhat obscure. Dated from the 19th century,
Belgian Rococo bears a resemblance to, and is said to have been inspired
by, the 17th and 18th century Italian needle-made as well as the
bobbin-made floral laces. There are many similarities of the Venetian
Rose Point, Milanese, Coraline, and Point Plat Italian patterns.
Rococo has also been described as an "imitation Rosaline bobbin lace", with
the same techniques found in elements of both. British authors Louisa and
Rosa Tebbs, in their book, "A Supplement to the Art of Bobbin Lace",
state that the Venetian style is "without doubt one of the most beautiful
of all laces." With respect to both the Italian and Belgian varieties of this
lace, we agree. "
