Cheerleading fun!

Nov 13, 2005 22:46

I ran lights for a cheerleading competition today. I was sitting next to the stage and knew I would pass out before too long after the show started due to lack of sleep the night before. So I decided to keep a running injury/face-plant score! Sadistic, maybe. Interesting, who knows? Did it keep me awake watching for girls/guys to face plant into the floor after a complicated lift just as if I was watching a NASCAR race and waiting for a crash!? Hell yeah!

I just thought I'd share for no reason other than, like the forum says, I thought it was interesting. (that and I'm half asleep now, so everything is interesting... especially that joyous lack-of-sleep intoxication/impairment.

2 Falls due to uneven spring floor:
The back edge of padding was floating so it was a minor trip hazard.

22 Falls during flips/individual stunts:
Must have had obvious accidental contact with ground...
...like landing face first into the mat!

18 Falls/drops in lifts:
Obvious uncontrolled falls where either the person being lifted...
...or one of the supporters hits/plants into the ground

2 Confirmed falls on the main floor:
The main floor was slightly slick due to it being on top of hockey ice...
...running kids+slick floor=slip n' slide fun!

1 On stage related injury/broken bone:
Girl fell off stage after show while hopping down.
Helps if you use the stairs... 10ft to your right!
You know, the same way you got on stage!

1 Confirmed Illness:
Watched a girl turn back to audience, puke into hand...
...and toss it upstage to hide it!
While discusted, I have to admit, she had some brass balls for making it through.
She did this twice, during a group performance.
(possible second illness... figured same girl)

1 Girl was reported as passing out/nearly not breathing!
Due to becoming overheated/dehydrated.
EMT's took good care of her and she was okay last I heard.

1 Broken arm, non-stage related.
Not sure what happened, just that EMT's were called.
My understanding is she either fell on stairs, or fell on the concrete.

The image I hope to leave with you as I pass out is that of not the injuries or the illness, but of the 54 slips/trips/falls/faceplants that while embarrassing and amusing to the rest of us, didn't cause permanent physical damage. i can't speak for any of these kids psyches.

Payback for my evil Karma!!!
The show ended at 5pm. Our crew wasn't scheduled to help us load out until 8pm, so I and the other lighting tech had to take down the lighting gear and store everything we could until they arrived to help us load the truck. Weeeeeeeeeee *thuds into the desk and passes out*
