A small rap at the window, faint enough that she could almost ignore the fact that she'd heard it in the first place --but she knew what it was, and the thought made her heart swell in her chest. Still, she kept her eyes on the computer screen, chewing her bottom lip until the sound got louder, rock against glass. It became impossible to ignore, and so she got up, going over to the window and pulling it open before leaning inside. A pebble went soaring past her head, just barely missing her, and she heard an audible "oops" from just below her window.
"Are you really throwing rocks at my window?" she asked, trying so hard to sound somewhat annoyed by the turn events, even though she was anything but.
"Yes I am, Billie Beckett. Now get your pretty ass out here, we've got a prom to go to."
Her heart sank again, and her eyes diverted from the other speaker --a well dressed young woman in a short black and purple dress and heels who Billie knew wouldn't leave her front lawn unless Billie agreed to leave with her.
"Throwing rocks is cliché," Billie pointed out, but it was only half-heartedly, and that wasn't going to have any real effect. "Besides, I'm not dressed." She waved a hand towards herself, looking a bit drab to be going to a school dance. Tank tops and jean shorts were ideal for lounging around the house, not for putting oneself on a pedestal for judgment by a body of peers.
"I want to go with you no matter how you're dressed. I don't care if you want to wear a leopard print snuggie. You'll still look hot on my arm. I want you there."
"You're not thinking this through," Billie argued, and it was a tired debate they'd had so many times before so they were both sick of it. "We can't do this. Everyone will find out, your friends, the teachers."
"And so what? Let them. I don't care. Get your ass down here now, Beckett."
"Or what, Saporta?" Billie answered stubbornly.
"Or I'll come up and drag you down here. You know I can."
Billie paused a moment before closing the window to get dressed.
----------
"We can't do this," Billie insisted as they stood at the front doors of the school. She flinched when Gabrielle touched her, which made Gabrielle frown.
It hadn't been easy for either of them to admit to themselves that they weren't 'normal'. They both had their own struggles. Gabrielle 'Gabey' Saporta was a popular girl, she always had been. She was the type of girl who could liven up an entire room with only a smile or a joke. Everyone thought she was going places --she was a star. Billie was much more reserved, preferring to hide behind her long wavy brown locks and textbooks. When Gabrielle was failing in English, the teacher had suggested she find a tutor, and Billie had always been the brightest in class. Before then, Gabrielle had never really given Billie a second look, but all that changed. They bonded over music and candy, and one day they kissed and never looked back.
It didn't take long at all for Gabrielle to come to terms with the fact that she preferred Billie's soft slight curves to men. She'd never had much interest in the opposite sex, even though most expected her to be dating the prom king.
It shocked Billie's world. She'd grown into the expectation of the lonely studious type. Embracing the stereotype, she never thought she'd find someone. Much less a girl. Definitely not Gabrielle. She still questioned what Gabrielle saw in her, thought that maybe she was just a passing phase, despite how many times Gabrielle had told her otherwise. The doubt still lingered, it always did. She couldn't help but worry. That's why she hesitated at the front doors. Walking in together, Gabrielle's arm firm around her waist, they'd be making a statement. It was a statement that Billie wasn't sure she wanted to be made. She'd always been insecure, despite Gabey's best tries to fix that. None of it mattered when it was just Gabey and her, the rest of the world slipped away into the background. They'd been together over a year, and Billie relished the alone time. Allowing others back into her life made her fear that they'd wreck everything, ruin everything she had gained.
"We're doing this," Gabrielle stated, and she sounded so sure that Billie knew she wouldn't be able to argue her girlfriend down, so she let herself be dragged along.
----------
"They're starting to stare," Billie observed, leaning into Gabrielle, the way she had been all night. Neither of them had said a word to anyone else yet. Girls dancing together wasn't an abnormal thing by any means, but the way Billie and Gabrielle were acting wasn't typical of two friends dancing; Gabrielle's arm was anchored firmly around Billie's waist, fingers sliding up and down he smooth fabric of Billie's powder blue dress. Gabrielle had joked that they looked like day and night, Billie with her white tights and heels and dress that brought to mind a warm sunny day, then Gabrielle who was flashy as always with her black and black with dark purple mixed in to add a needed splash of color.
"I'd stare too if I was them. We're two hot girls in love. They're jealous."
Billie couldn't help but smile at that, ducking her head down to hide how Gabrielle's statement had affected her, but it was obvious already that Gabrielle was winning her over.
Gabrielle's arms moved from around Billie's waist, sliding down Billie's arm and intertwining their fingers as a slow song started.
"Is this…" Billie started, looking deep in thought for a moment as she tried to place the song, "Is this N'Sync?"
Gabrielle nodded. "I requested it earlier. Justin Timberlake speaks all the words in my heart." She pulled Billie closer as she sang along to the lyrics, swaying back and forth like one would expect to see at a middle school dance. "God must have spent a little more time on you."
Billie snorted, shaking her head and lifting a hand to try and get Gabey to stop. Instead, Gabey grabbed Billie's hand, holding it out before slipping a ring onto it.
Billie gasped when she realized what ring it was, Gabey's absolute favorite snake ring. "You can't give this to me."
"I can if I want to. And I want to," Gabey answered, and there was no arguing with that either. When Gabey made up her mind that was the end of that. "I bought another one so now we'll match."
"You put it on my ring finger," Billie pointed out. "People will think I've gotten engaged to a snake charmer."
"It's a promise ring."
"What's the promise?" Billie asked. She could feel the blush creeping up her cheeks.
"That no matter what anyone else says or does, we're gonna end up together. I read it in the stars. It's fate."
That was all Billie needed to hear, and even though she knew they were in a crowded room the rest of the world slipped away and everything felt right away. No one could ruin what they had. All the hesitation and insecurity was gone as Billie leaned forward and pressed their mouths together. The slow swaying ended, and the world didn't crash around their feet as Billie had once expected. It was just two girls in love, standing in the middle of the dance floor.
