I am home from a delightful Thanksgiving weekend with my mom and Brent. We had our Thanksgiving on Friday because I had to work on Thursday morning and we didn't end up leaving Chicago until about 2pm. Thus, we didn't get to Viroqua until almost 7 and since we had all planned on cooking and knew that I probably would have to work Thursday morning, we just decided from the beginning to scoot the big dinner forward a day to give ourselves more time to cook and get everything ready. Ultimately, we had 6 of my mom's friends over, all of whom I also know and like, and the evening was amazing. There was turkey (deep fried in Brent's infrared turkey fryer), mashed potatoes, Korean brussels sprouts with cilantro, green beans with oranges and almonds, a mushroom-spinach dish, cranberry-orange relish, cranberry-apple sauce, and a wild rice stuffing with hazelnuts and cranberries that would have been great except with all the excitement it got left in the oven too long. Excitement? Yes, you see, it was all going swimmingly until the part where Brent was cutting the giblets for the gravy and thought it would be a good idea to take the phrase "putting one's blood, sweat and tears into something" literally... and cut about 1/16 of an inch (about 1 mm) off the top of his finger and part of his fingernail. Like me, he doesn't panic at things like that so he washed it off, put gauze on it, put pressure on it, and finished making the gravy before he would let my mom's friend Diane take him to the emergency room. The doctors bandaged it up really well, but couldn't put stitches on because we couldn't find the bit of finger he cut off (though we did wash off the knife and throw away the closest bit of cut giblets to make sure it didn't actually get in the gravy) so we have to be careful about infection. But at least Brent isn't cooking for a living. He might be typing a bit more slowly but at least he won't risk getting hot soup or pasta sauce on his finger at work.

Ugh. Speaking of work, I have to go finish work stuff now. And I have to get up early for work tomorrow, to pack my inventory that wasn't brought on Friday. Sigh. Some parts of long weekends aren't so good. :(
