Yesterday was absolutely brilliant. Already I consider myself a veritable guru of London. Genevieve, Matt and I met at a coffee shop around ten in the morning and the preceded, backpacks in hand, to a street market that we had heard about. It was amazing! There were tents everywhere selling kitchen supplies, jewelry, clothing, bathroom supplies, and of course fruits and vegetables. We walked through everything, surveyed each tent and complimented ourselves on our skills at having found this cheap and wonderful place. For less than 8 pounds I was able to buy fruits, garlic, spice, a mug, and several other things. And while walking back we happened upon this Chinese supplies store where I was able to buy fresh spice. Now every time I open up my kitchen cupboard a gentle wave of what should be basil but smells much more exotic, hits me. It's awesome. After we returned Matt and I picked up the rest of our flatmates and we went to Covent Garden to walk around their shops. There I bought my first present for anyone (mom'll be happy to know that it's for her ;) ). We also came across some jugglers in the street. They weren't spactacular, I mean, they were pretty cheesy, but they reminded me of Todd and Allison and how they are going to teach the theatre senior seminar how to eat fire next year and it made me smile. At some point we went to Oxford Circus (which truly deserves the name by the way). People don't look where they're going here! You think people in America are bad! At least Americans have the occasional tendency to say "excuse me!" Here they're having none of it. They'll run straight into you without thinking twice. But anyways, I digress. We topped off the evening with "The Big Lebowski" which Matt and I (after having devised an incredibly elaborate plan to elude one of our flatmates that we almost can't stand so that we could hang out with Genevieve and enjoy some peace and quiet). It was perfect.
All of us American students are also learning to adjust a little better as well. For example, Matt and I both managed to prepare absolutely wonderful dinners for ourselves last night, mine was a tomato and mozzarella salad with olive oil, basil and garlic, and his a pasta with butter and white wine sauce with garlic. We feel thoroughly awesome and accomplished right now. This feeling will come in handy because we start classes this week. I only have classes tuesday, and friday (and I think London Theatre, the one where they take us to plays every week, is on wednesday). I'm also taking French Theatre History, an English course on Shakespeare, and a course called modernisms and postmodernity so I don't have to take theatre of revolt when I get back to school. HUZZAH. Oh! But I completely forgot to mention the unnecessary flatmate bonding. So I'm sitting in the kitchen (our kitchen faces a courtyard and completes a square with 3 other buildings, so I can look at what other people are doing in other kitchens, and voyeurism is now one of my favorite passtimes here) watching all the crazay people below and my flatmate Amy comes in and says she has a random question for me. I say alright. She asks if the viagra is an American made drug. I say yes, and conveniently forget to mention that my boyfriend's dad works for the company. So she starts asking me how much I know about it because someone had given her boyfriend a pill, her boyfriend who still happens to be here visiting. So I tell her all I know and she thanks me and scampers out of the kitchen. Needless to say I'm going to be leaving soon. love you all! And I miss my girl, Courtney!
