Well, my debit card was copied.
I don't know when, I don't know how, but when I got home today I got a cryptic message from the bank asking me to call their "Loss Prevention Centre" immediately. First thing I did was I called the number on the back of my access card to ensure the number I received was indeed a valid TD number. The person at EasyLine was able to confirm the number was valid, I thanked him, hung up and phoned.
I get on the line with a friendly sounding woman who asked me the standard security questions and then said my card had been flagged under suspicion of being copied. She asked if I had tried to make a transaction of $480-some dollars the day before and I said no. She assured me that they had caught it, and prevented the transaction from going through as it was placed in Laval, Quebec.
She told me that my access card was now deactivated and I had to go into a branch to get a new card and create a new PIN. I was also told that it could have been copied 3, 4, or even 6 months ago before they finally attempted to use it. She was sure to mention how much she hated "these people" and how they had "no lives and this is what they do for a living", and so I shouldn't feel terrible about it. She also informed me that if the account had been subjected to fraud, that I would be covered under their fraud protection program.
I'm shocked right now. I always thought I was so good about keeping track of my card. I always kept my eyes on what anyone handling my card was doing, I always tried to shield my PIN entry. My PIN wasn't complex, but it had no meaning and it wasn't obvious.
All I have to say is, wow, I'm so glad I'm a TD customer right now.
EDIT: It looks like
chenry got bit as well. I wonder if this was all from the same scam. If so, the only time I can think of that was sorta suspicious was when we were at Coliseum and using one of those self-serve ticket machines. The machine wouldn't process my card. I tried it a few times, then chenry tried it. Then we moved to another machine and it worked. That's really the only time I can think of where chenry and I both paid debit at the same time.
