I was riding in the car listening to the tragically hip's "Poets" and thinking about whether or not poets were truly more intelligent than say doctors, and the wondering how poets do get paid and if it had to do with unattractive big-breasted women whom they show how to love. Then a news snippet about John Ritter and Johnny Cash came on as I pulled into the parking lot and I decided to stay in the car to hear the Cash song. It was "hurt" the new song, a Nine-Inch Nails cover. . . and you know . . . I never knew this was a Nine-Inch Nails song, but this song changes in meaning when Johnny Cash sings it. The "needles" are no longer for just for IV drug use but also for insulin and when he sings "everyone I know goes a way in the end" he's not singing about an estranged person but about growing old - friends and family losing touch and dying. It's just amazing what his touch can do to someone. I found myself pulling a five dollar bill out of my pocket and realizing just that it just wasn't the money anymore.
