"Stop moping," Rachel said, pushing into his room with a cupcake on a paper plate, a rainbow candle burning in the middle. "I worked very hard to make you birthday cupcakes and I even touched eggs, and you know how I feel about touching eggs."

"I'm not moping," Kurt said, turning over in his bed and burrowing deeper down into the covers.

"You think I don't know what moping looks like?" Rachel says, sitting down on the bed and elbowing him in the shoulder until he grumbles and scoots over. "Now blow out your candle and make a wish, and I'll know if you fake it."

Kurt rolls his eyes at Rachel before he closes them and blows out the candle.

"I know what you wished for," Rachel says, petting at his hair.

"No you don't," Kurt grumps. "I could have wished for anything."

"You wished for Blaine," she says, pulling the candle out of the cupcake and sucking the icing off. "Don't give me that look, the icing's vegan."

"I just hate the weather," Kurt groans, reaching for the cupcake and peeling back the wrapper. There are balloons on it. "And I also hate everything else."

"I know," Rachel says. "Now eat your cupcake while I go get the hot chocolate."

"Hot chocolate?" Kurt asks hopefully.

"I got you the kind you like, with the tiny marshmallows," Rachel says, hopping off the bed and heading out the door. Kurt smiles to himself and takes a bite of his cupcake. He should really make sure to thank Rachel when she gets back - if she bought him hot chocolate it means she probably couldn't afford to get herself some too. He knows he's being kind of a brat, but it's his first birthday away from home and Blaine was supposed to fly out to spend the weekend with him before the snowstorm hit and his flight was canceled. He'd even tried booking a last minute Greyhound, but his parents didn't want him traveling in the storm and they were ruining Kurt's life.

It's possible he was being a bit melodramatic, but he missed Blaine. He missed Blaine, and he missed his family, and he missed home, and Kurt felt his eyes welling up again when he thought about his last birthday. He'd been tucked under his dad's arm as Carole brought the cake out and Blaine and Rachel sang him an earnestly over-the-top rendition of Happy Birthday while Finn drummed out the beat on the kitchen table.

"Oh Kurt," Rachel says from the doorway. "Kurt, don't cry."

"I'm not," Kurt sniffs, wiping at his eyes with the sleeves of the hoodie he's wearing - one of Blaine's, of course. Rachel sets the mug she's carrying on Kurt's bedside table and slides under the covers, gathering Kurt close and tugging until he gives in and collapses against her, wrapping his arms around her waist and burying his face in her sweater.

"It's okay to be sad, you know," Rachel says, petting at his hair. "You can pretend I'm Blaine if you want, I know we're almost the same size."

Kurt laughs, lifting his head up and smiling weakly at her. "Your boobs are much bigger than his," he says, sniffling.

"I don't hear that often," Rachel says happily, settling in against the pillows and letting Kurt cuddle back up to her.

"It's not just Blaine," Kurt says quietly after a few minutes. "I miss my dad. I miss Finn and Carole. I miss home."

"I know," Rachel says softly. "Or are you forgetting the breakdown I had all over your favorite Gucci button-up when my dads couldn't get time off to come to the show?"

"I remember," Kurt says. "I never could get the mascara out of my shirt, but you made a spectacular Bebe."

"Yes, well, I still think I should have gotten Cassie," Rachel says. "That girl they cast brought down the entire production, but the point is, it's okay. I understand. You don't have to pretend like you're not upset."

Kurt laughs, remembering the look on Rachel's face when her biggest rival had gotten the part in A Chorus Line, and then he laughs even more when he remembers how drunk they had gotten on cheap rum that night, and then before he realizes it he's crying, loud and ugly, pressing his face to Rachel's chest and letting her rub his back as his breath hitches.

He's just starting to calm down, his tears drying up as his breathing evens out, when his phone rings, Blaine's ringtone playing. "Oh god," Kurt says, sitting up and wiping at his face. "I can't talk to him right now, I'm a mess."

"Yes you can, it'll make you feel better," Rachel says, reaching for his phone and picking up the call before Kurt can stop her, swiping at the screen and putting it on speaker.

"Hello lover," she purrs, giggling when Kurt rolls his eyes at her.

"Rachel?" Blaine asks over the line. "Where's Kurt?"

"He's right here," Rachel says. "I'm taking care of him for you in your absence."

"Have you two been drinking again?" Blaine asks nervously. "Because once is a mistake but twice is a habit and--"

"We were just hugging, Blaine," Kurt says quickly, grabbing the phone and taking it off of speaker. "Hugging."

"I know what hugging can lead to," Blaine says, his voice sounding tinny and entirely too far away, and Kurt laughs, his breath hitching again.

"I miss you," he says, his voice small and choked up, and Rachel leans down to kiss his forehead, sliding out of the bed.

"I'll leave you two alone, okay? Text me when you're done and I'll bring you another cupcake and we can watch Funny Girl." Kurt nods, smiling at her as she turns and leaves, shutting the door softly behind her.

"I miss you too," Blaine says, breathing out heavily over the line. "Kurt? Are you there?"

"Yeah," Kurt says, shaking his head a little when he realizes he hadn't actually replied. "Yeah, I'm here. Hi."

"Hi," Blaine says. "Happy birthday."

"Thanks," Kurt says, his voice still a little shaky. "Rachel made me cupcakes. Real ones, with eggs and butter and everything."

"Yeah?" Blaine asks. "Good. Kurt I'm-- I'm so sorry I can't be there," he says, his voice cracking a little. "You know I tried, I tried so hard, but--"

"Shh, I know," Kurt says, turning on his side and cuddling up to his pillow. "I know you did. It's okay. I just-- I miss you, you know?"

"I know," Blaine says softly. "I miss you too. I love you."

"I love you too," Kurt says, smiling. "Now tell me all about this drama Tina's been email me about. And use details, I know she's been leaving things out."

Blaine laughs and starts to explain, something about Sugar trying to seduce the Gerber Baby to learn her secrets and how it almost got both teams disqualified from Regionals, and Kurt pulls Blaine's hoodie tighter around himself, pressing the phone close to his ear and closing his eyes, listening to the familiar sound of Blaine's voice.
