So I'm watching Bravo for some ungodly reason and see that a programme coming up next is "The History of Reggae" so I decided to watch it figuring it would be another knock off and just the basic crap. Much to my suprise in the beginning they start up about ska and the main artists of the time and producers and the like which gains my trust in thinking this might be actually worth the 2 hours I am about to put into it. So they go into the early 60's and start up about Britain and since they had already mentioned the rude boys in Jamaica in '66 I figure, hell its the U.K. they're talking about reggae and its mid to late 60's they have to mention skinhead somewhere in this. They go on and on about the times and how it was hard to get a cross over and that then they mention mods and mentioned scooters boys, show a few on their scooters and such bouncing about in their best gear at youth clubs, which only wettens my curiosity about when skinhead will be mentioned. So they ramble on (much as I am doing now) and finally they show a few youths... cropped hair and byrds turned out in best gear dancing it up to the tunes and I wait to hear that word, just one mention of it would have made me completely satisfied with watching this so-called "history" but they pan off them and refer to them as "British Youths" without one fekkin mention of SKINHEAD in the whole fekkin film. Even later in the film they talked about the Clash and Johnny Rotten loving reggae but where was our beloved skinhead, The ones who have kept the torch burning for these 40-50 some odd years?
I ask you this, what is reggae if not a home to Skinhead? What has the skinhead movement's roots based itself upon, what have skinheads cherished throughout the years with lables like Studio One and Trojan (Trojan was not mentioned in this film I might add) How can they call it a History if this major part of it's history is left out. If you can fekkin show these kids with their crops and feathercuts in ace gear looking the part as though they stepped from a Richard Allen novel then you can certainly call them by their rightful name SKINHEAD! We have given so much to the history of reggae and yet we still seem to fall through the cracks even in such a comprehensive, yet somewhat lacking view of this wonderful thing that is Reggae. Blahhhh!!!
