Summary: Three weeks after the party. Tony's home, Katie's nervous, and Effy's scared.
It was funny to Effy. How they just laid on her bed, sat on the floor, sat at the kitchen table, laid on the floor, or even walked down the street and all they did was talk. They didn't drink, smoke, or do drugs. They just talked about anything and everything. That's all they did for three weeks.
"Tell me about your brother," Katie said the night of the party. The one where Cook showed up. That's when this whole talking thing started.
"What do you want to know?"
"I don't know. Anything. Everything."
Effy hated talking about Tony to people who don't know him. She hates talking in general. But this was Katie and she knew somehow that fucking burnette would force her to talk.
"Well, I think he's the best thing that ever happened to me so far in my life."
"Why?"
"He was always there for me. I used to party all the goddamn time. I would stay out all morning and he would cover for me. This one time I was at a party. These kids drugged me up and almost killed me. Tony was there to save me. When he got hit by a bus, I was there."
"You saw him?"
"Yeah. I thought I had lost him for good. Luckily he didn't die. He was fucked up though. Well fucked up. It didn't help that his girlfriend started shagging his best friend. Things got even worse then. Sid didn't really love Michelle, but loved this girl named Cassie. Cass hated Sid for fucking Michelle, Tony hated Michelle and Sid. I had to sort that shit out. That's around the time I met Panda."
"Did the four of them make up then?"
"Yeah. Sid and Cass are in New York the last time I heard. Chelle and Tone are fucking in love."
Katie enjoyed listening to Effy talk. She's never heard Effy say that much, and she didn't even have to force her to.
"What about you, Katie?"
"What about me?"
"Why did you always put Emily in your shadow?"
"I didn't mean to. It just kind of happened. Plus mum always favored me more than Emily. When we were younger, Emily used to be the student while I was the teacher. She was too scared to stand in front of me and teach me the ABCs. I don't know, she just always seemed like she wanted to be in my shadow."
These kind of talks would go on for hours. Sometimes they would lose track of time and suddenly it would be five in the morning before they realized. Katie usually spent the night if the talks went past midnight. The day before Tony was coming home, Katie spent the night.
"You spending the night," Effy asked when Katie got up and shut the light off then laid down on the bed.
"Yeah. I'm meeting your brother tomorrow. Might as well stay the night."
"Katie."
Katie flipped over so she was facing Effy.
"What?"
Effy leaned in and pressed her lips to Katie's. It was the first time in three weeks. The kiss had turned into Katie on top of Effy. Suddenly both of their tops were off. This isn't what Effy had expected when she had kissed Katie, but she wasn't about to object. She had actually missed their rumbles. Since it had been a while, it didn't take long for Effy to go over the edge. Katie rolled off and they both panted.
"Night," Katie said after kissing Effy one last time on the lips.
"Goodnight." Effy held back the words that shocked her. I love you.
Before falling asleep, Katie thought back to one night during all their talking. The night she talked about her premature menopause.
"I can't have kids."
"Why's that?"
"Doctor said I have premature menopause. It fucking killed me when she said it, too. My family was going through shit then. Even fucking Emily. I had to hold everything together, or it at least felt like I did."
"Was that when you punched that bitch in the face?"
"Around that time. This girl was getting married, yeah? She fucking says that she's pregnant. She was drinking all fucking night."
"You got mad because she was hurting something you will never have?"
"Yeah."
Katie comes back to present time and closes her eyes.
"I love you," Katie whispers to Effy as she drifts off to sleep. She knew that Effy hadn't heard it and was glad. Effy would fucking freak.
The next morning, they wake up to the sound of Effy's mom squealing. Effy smiled right away. Tony's here. She started to get out of bed but was pulled back by Katie.
"My brother is here, Katie. I have to go see him."
"I'm nervous."
"Katie fucking Fitch is nervous about meeting someone mental?"
"I said I was sorry about calling him that!"
Effy kissed Katie on the tip of her nose then got dressed instantly.
"Well come on," Effy said when she noticed Katie hadn't moved. Katie pulled the blanket over her face but it was ripped off right away. She laughed then finally got up.
"Effy," Anthea called from downstairs.
"Be down in a bit, mum," she shouted then lowered her voice to Katie, "hurry the hell up, Fitch."
"Fuck off, Stonem," Katie snapped back as she slipped her shirt on. When she was done, she got pulled all the way downstairs by Effy. They walked into the living room after a quick kiss.
"Effy," Tony shouted as he ran to his little sister. She got picked up off the ground and was spun around several times.
"Hey Tones! I've missed you."
Tony hadn't visited for two years now, but they had talked to each other quite often on the phone.
"Hello Effy. How are you," a familair voice sing-songs from behind Tony. Effy cracked a smile at Michelle and remembers the last time she visited and she did that.
"Hey Chelle. I'm fucking amazing. How are you," she sing-songs back. They laughed together before hugging. She had learned to love Michelle over the last two years. They had e-mailed each other everyday, and Effy always insisted on talking to Michelle whenever she was talking to Tony.
"I'm great. Feels weird being back in Bristol though."
"I bet. Have either of you heard from Sid and Cass?"
"Yeah. Talked to them yesterday, actually. They're going to be moving back to England sometime."
"Why?"
"Cass wants to have the baby in England."
"Cass is pregnant?"
"Yep. She's only a month along though."
Katie stood up against the wall listening in confusion. Effy had tried explaining all of Tony's friends to her, but Katie couldn't keep up. Sid was Tony's best friend, Cassie was Sid's girlfriend who moved to New York, Michelle was Tony's girlfriend who slept with Sid. That was all Katie could really remember.
"Shit, sorry Katie. Tones, Chelle, this is Katie Fitch. My... best friend."
Katie walked up next to Effy and waved at the two people smiling at her. She felt even shorter when she was near them.
"Hello Katie. I'm Tony, Ef's older brother. This is Michelle, my girlfriend."
"It's nice to meet both of you."
Katie stuck out her hand to Tony but he wrapped his arms around her. She awkwardly patted his back once she knew he wasn't going to let go.
"Tones, don't kill her," Michelle yelled. Katie cringed at the joke. When she was released, she noticed that Effy tensed up at what Michelle said.
"We have a lot to talk about, Katie," Tony said while sitting back down.
"Yeah, I know."
"Mum, why don't you go shopping for a few hours," Effy suggested. Anthea caught on right away and was already out the door.
"So you two are shagging," Tony stated once Anthea was officially gone.
"You told him that," Katie whispered to Effy. She started tensing up even more when Effy nodded her head.
"Y-yeah," Katie stuttered.
"Hey, it's not that bad. We have a gay friend. I think it's fucking fantastic. Ef's always had trouble with guys. Maybe all she needed was a woman."
Effy throwed a pillow at Tony which was only thrown back. Katie and Michelle laughed in unison at the two Stonem's fight.
"What a fucking family, yeah," Katie said mid-laugh to Michelle.
"Yeah. They seem like total cocks on the outside, but when you break them down and see the inside, they are some of the best people you could ever meet."
"Got that right," Tony added after he was done chasing Effy through the living room. Effy sat down by Katie who smiled at her. Effy liked how Katie's smile could make her insides turn to mush. It was a feeling she had never gotten from any guy before, not even Freddie.
"How did this whole thing start," Tony asked while lighting a cigarette.
"About two months," Effy replied.
"Have you told anyone?"
"You two and our friend Naomi."
"What she think about it?"
"She thinks it's hilarious."
"Why?"
"My sister is gay. I gave her shit about it for a long time. Naomi's her girlfriend and I gave her shit also."
"That is hilarious. So you two gay then?"
Katie looked at Effy quickly then shrugged her shoulders.
"Don't know what I am."
"Ef?"
Effy stared at her brother for about a minute.
"Don't tell me your pulling this silence shit again," Michelle says to break the silence.
"I don't know," Effy finally answers Tony's question. Tony smiled then removed himself from the couch.
"Right. Chelle and I are going to go unpack. Then we're going to go to Chris' grave."
Effy nodded and waited until Michelle and Tony were upstairs to grab Katie's hand.
"Who's Chris," Katie asked as soon as she feels Effy's finger intertwining with hers.
"A friend of their's. He died a couple years ago."
"Your brother is cool."
They were back to the talking thing. Effy sighed in her mind.
"Let's stop talking," Effy murmers as she leans into Katie. Just as their lips were about to touch, Tony pops into the room.
"Ef, we need- oh, shit! Sorry, didn't mean to interrupt."
"What is it, Tones," Effy asks with annoyance.
"We just need a blanket."
"Mum's closet."
"Right."
Tony winked at Effy then left the room.
"Sometimes he is."
"What?"
"Cool. Sometimes he's cool, other times he's a complete cock."
"You must have learned from him."
Effy smiled then opened her mouth. She closed it before those three words came slipping out. I love you.
