I noticed several interesting parallels in 4x03 to scenes in Series One and Two...
One of the things I love about Skins is that it likes to subtly reference itself. Cook's episode this series was by far the most S1-esque episode since...well, Series One. The light humor mixed in with dark elements, the balance between angst and sweet/funny moments, and the pacing was all surprisingly there. Cook's little brother and sex-crazed and creepy mother was a mix of Michelle's step-dad and Cassie's bizarre parents who absently took care of her poor little baby brother when they weren't having loud sex. Duncan, Cook's lawyer, was obviously a throwback to Mad Twatter (especially in his first scene when he mused about the sandwich and wrote notes about Cook's intelligence). The quiet comedy there was very Skins, something I have missed in this show for awhile now.
The biggest parallel was Cook missing Effy and looking through sexy photos of her on his phone while crying. This was a reference to Tony missing Michelle and looking through sexy photos of her on his phone. In a lot of ways, Cook and Effy are like Tony and Michelle: they mostly have sex in the beginning and don't exhibit a connection until it all gets fucked up one way or another and they end up missing each other. Cook looking through those photos on his phone was a great moment to me, showing that like Tony, although he may appear to be a jerk he only acts that way to cover up his internal issues.
I predict Cook and Effy will end up in a similar way that Tony and Michelle did, or they will end up a couple of some kind.
Did you spot these or any other references?
