He isn’t very good at recognising tone, subtleties like that are lost on him He doesn’t get sarcasm or figurative language much either. So when she tells him that he’s perfect and lovely he laughs because he assumes it’s a joke, she can’t actually mean it, can she?
“I mean it, JJ,” she whispers, looking down at her feet. “I wish it was a joke. That‘d be easier, yeah?”
“C-could you say it again?” he asks, forcing himself to look at her, both of them flushed.
“You’re perfect,” she says, “completely and totally perfect.”
He still thinks he’s missing something.
