Winter hair woes

What do you do when your hair starts misbehaving with the changes in weather? body_song asked this question in longhair:

My hair has been feeling so gross lately and I think it's due to the weather changing! What sort of things do you do/use to save your hair from the winter weather?

(See the thread here.)
 Here's my response:

If your hair is dry or weak and you want a DIY fix, you can try a hair mask conditioning treatment. Whip up 1 egg white until it has a frothy texture, and add 5 tablespoons of plain yogurt. Put the mixture on your hair for 10 to 15 minutes. Then, rinse well using warm water.

Or, if your hair is especially dried-out and damaged, you can apply mayonnaise and olive oil. Wrap your hair in a towel or plastic wrap, then leave the mixture on for 20 minutes and rinse thoroughly.

For maintenance, I use apple cider vinegar on my ends in the shower, and coconut oil overnight. Jojoba or vitamin E oil are good too, depending on how much hydration you need. I also try to avoid heat styling as much as possible, so I go curly when the weather is damp or shower at night and twist my hair up to (hopefully - if I'm lucky :) turn out wavy and manageable in the morning.
