Easy Beach-Inspired Beauty

Jul 27, 2010 14:23

I grew up near the beach, and I always loved that easy-breezy, tousled look that naturally happens after a day spent in the sun and surf. Something about the combination of sea air and salt water creates perfectly touchable waves and glowing, sun-kissed skin that simply can't be replicated.

Well, now I live hours from any beach, but I still crave that effortlessly beautiful beach look. How to achieve it without risky sun exposure and heat styling? Here are some easy tips for beach-worthy summer hair and skin.

Bronzed body

Not only does having bronzed skin require hours in the sun, it’s accompanied by some serious sun damage. There’s no better - and safer - way to create your ideal summer color than by doing it yourself at home with self-tanner.

Before applying any tanning formula, remember to shave and exfoliate your skin, being careful to scrub dry knees and elbows. This helps to create a smooth surface and an even skin tone.

For medium color that lasts about a week, I've been using Fake Bake Instant Self Tanning Spray , an ultra-light and fast-acting formula. (Be sure to rinse your hands well afterward.) Another fuss-free way to tan is with TanTowel Plus Full Body Self Tanning Towelettes. Just one of these citrus-scented towelettes covers the entire body with self-tanner, minus the mess and grease.

Wavy hair

Summer is the season to wear waves and there’s no better wave-maker than a dip in the salty ocean…or is there? Get a just-beached wave effect with a product that’ll bring out your curls, give your hair great texture and condition all at once.

Spritz Frederic Fekkai Coiff Oceanique Tousled Wave Spray onto dry or damp hair and use your fingers to style. Or spray Philip B Maui Wowie Beach Mist onto damp hair and air-dry or blow-dry with a diffuser. You’ll love your hair’s newfound texture!

Radiant skin

Something about the sun and salt air gives skin a dewy radiance. The secret is that you can easily recreate radiant skin at home. For the most natural glow, choose a highlighter that works with your skin tone and apply sparingly.

A golden champagne highlighter looks best on fair to medium skin tones, while deeper bronze shades flatter dark skin. Dab highlighter, like Philosophy’s The Color of Grace Heavenly Light Pink Illuminator (for fair skin) or Too Faced Caribbean in a Compact - Sun Bunny (for darker tones) from the temples to the tops of cheekbones for sun-kissed shine.

Pale nails

The fastest way to make your beach-inspired tan pop is to accent it with soft, pale nails. Try SpaRitual Nail Lacquer It’s a Breeze, a sheer buff crème, on fingernails, paired with DuWop Glass Slipper, a pale pink, on toes.

Not into the subtle shades? Eye-popping brights will show off your golden glow as well. Go for SpaRitual Nail Lacquer Flashback, a hot coral color.

In just a few minutes, and with the right tools, you can easily tap into summer beauty - and do so safely! Keep these beauty tricks handy for any day you want to look like a beach goddess, regardless of the season.
