[Nel hasn’t the faintest idea how to activate an audio post. Even if she did, she doesn’t realize that nobody on the boat would understand her, so that’s actually pretty lucky. She spends ten seconds cautiously touching the communicator before deciding she has bigger problems.

After a thorough scan for traps (with her eyes and her other wits), she chances trying to open the door to her room. It’s unlocked.

Instead of being comforted, it makes her neck hairs prickle. Nel has no idea why she’s been taken by offworlders-something of an assumption, but who else would leave a device like that lying around-as an unknown ”underdeveloped life form”, who would have reason to? Yes, she’s a valuable diplomat, intelligence officer and the Queen’s own walking talking knife.

But that shouldn’t matter to anybody not from her world. They have their own politics to hassle over.

The open door, and the fact that she doesn’t remember being taken, says that her kidnapper is either arrogant and/or doesn’t need to keep her locked in. Nel, very unhappy, strides calmly and naturally down the hall of her deck. The widening spread of her sixth sense and constantly ticking eyes betray her anxiety.

Other than the obvious, i.e. her kidnapping and her father’s stolen blades, something else is very, very wrong.

CARE TO MEET AN ALIEN?]
