Question for you guys:

Ever notice how the people on this ship tend to be people that you couldn't stand back home? Hell, even a bitter enemy of yours?

It makes me wonder how deliberate Redd's choice is in plucking these people from our worlds. If it's a deliberate way to make the passengers' stay that much more hellish.

[He takes a deep sigh ( Read more... )

There's only one person here from my homeworld that's my enemy, but I'm not sure how common that is.

But... I guess at the same time, my best friend is here! Even though that's the only person I actually knew before. The rest are THOUSANDS of years into the past.

[Ed tries to follow Link's words. He really, really does. But the "thousands of years" part throws him for a loop.]

What do you mean, "thousands of years"? What, can you guys time-travel where you're from?

The Legendary Hero could time travel! But that's why he's called the Hero of Time... no one else can do that.

What I meant is that before they showed up here, they literally lived thousands of years before me! People that come here can be from any time period in a world.

So, in theory, they can change the future if they find out it turns to shit? They can just go back in time and change the course of events to their liking?

[How many people haven't wished that they can do that? It sounds like the perfect ability to have.]

[Wow Ed, what a disturbingly relevant question to ask.]

I wish I could do that. The things that go wrong in their future will have happened in my past, so I could tell them and they could change it... but it could also change everything, both good and bad about my present. I could go back and find out that the world I know is gone, because of what they did to theirs.

[Pause. There's a smart word to make this seem less weird.] Hypothetically! It sounds kind of mean, but it's so dangerous.

[It takes him a moment to digest that. To know the future and not doing anything because of the potential to make it worse....?]

That's quite a burden, to know how things turn out and not be able to do a thing about it. But it's the lesser of two evils, I guess.

You're right. It's not really easy, but since I can't know the possibilities of changing something like that, it's safer not to try.

[And he switches off the Lock from this point onward.]

What about you? Is there anyone from your world that's here?

...erm, yeah. I have my old commanding officer, a fucking psychopath who used to work for the military (but he's also trigger-happy), and a Homunculus. Two out of the three have tried killing me.

Yup.
