Small boats in the harbour on a foggy morning

I remember once going to Alqualonde with Findarato. Why did we go together? We weren’t particular friends, though Findarato was friendly with everybody. Perhaps there was no other company; he needed to visit his relatives and I had nothing better to do than accompany him.

Anyway, off we went, not really hurrying, walking and watching everything around, at times exchanging anecdotes, and at times keeping silence. Findarato was good company; he knew when to talk and when to be silent.

Fog was a rare sight on most of the land in Aman. I only saw it on some mountainous plateaus, but there it was, swirling over the sea surface, clinging to the boats as if covering them with Ulmo’s cloak. It was beautiful and at the same time alien to me.

It wasn’t alien to Findarato, however. I could notice him seeing things I did not see, appreciating the work that went into these boats. So I watched him as much as I watched the sea and the boats; the mix of known and unfamiliar.

Teleri were also friendly to me, but I did not have close friends there, so I spent the day walking around and watching everything, probably my quietest day in a long while.

Next time I saw Alqualonde, most of these boats were already broken.
