Despite the fact that this happened almost a month ago, I think the story merits an email, however belated it may be. To start things off, nobody told me that there are scorpions in Uruguay. Did anybody else know this?

Because now I know this.

I was happily pulling on my dive boots one morning at Cerro Verde as we readied for another riveting round of capture - when much to my surprise, STAB STAB STAB on my left foot inside my dive boot. Off came the boot and my eyes widened as I pulled (okay, swept with all the calm manner of a panick-stricken individual) a 3 cm scorpion off of my foot. As it turned out, it wasn't a very poisonous one, and nothing gets the blood going like a little scorpion venom; as it were, apparently it also attracts wildlife like some nectar of the gods, because on this day we caught five turtles (including one with a satellite transmitter), a baby hammerhead shark, and a sting ray. As if that weren't enough, no sooner do I attempt to start removing the ray from the net on the beach than I notice a little mini-stingray flopping around on the sand next to it, and then HEY! another and another. So there you have it. We delivered stingray babies. Four of them. I'll be accepting offers from hospitals looking for male nurses all week. Now that I've rambled, check the little guys out.

(cute enough to break through even dick cheney's cold, metallic heart)

I came here to catch turtles, of course, so here is the fantastically cool one of the dude with the satellite transmitter.
