Rice, bricks & dejudge

Dec 05, 2004 05:02

The days here keep getting better. Yesterday I was invited to breakfast with a Saudi. I couldn’t believe it. Cheese omelet, scrambled eggs with tomato, peppers, and onion. It came with toast and what looked like Pita bread. I asked him why he bought me breakfast. He said, “You good to the Saudi’s”. I was tickled. I will have to buy next time. Or maybe throw something American together for him. They are just people.

I noticed a guy standing outside at attention. Come to find out that he was being punished for being late. Their version of ‘Time Out’ I guess. Far better than a lashing or a chopping, I would say.

I learned another Arabic word. ‘Shay’ means ‘what’. I also know that ‘dejudge’ means ‘chicken’. So if they ask me something in broken English that I don’t understand, I say “Shay, shay? Dejudge? Sorry. That’s all I know”. They crack up. I am getting there, but very slowly.

It turns out that I will get to be run qualified on the F-15. Every little bit helps the old resume. Be nice to get out on the flight line for a change.

I noticed something interesting on the way to work yesterday. There was a large building under construction. The walls were made of bricks. The thing was, you could see sunlight coming through between the bricks! Hardly any cement to speak of holding the bricks together. I’m so glad I am in a trailer. Tin doesn’t collapse quite the same way as bricks.

Rice. What is it about that stuff? If there is one simple thing in the world that I have not been able to master, it is cooking rice. Well, I had a thrill yesterday at the commissary. Instant rice!! I bought two boxes. If they have something you like, get a bunch of it. Ya never know when they will have it in again.

Also, if anyone has a generous mood, feel free to send me some ‘Shake and Bake’ for chicken. Can’t get it here, and I love the stuff. Tonight I am going to try and make mashed potatoes using canned taters. This should be interesting. Drop me a line if you get the urge.
