Samantha was depressed. Ever since the arrest of Donald Lucas, she felt like her world had been turned upside down. Dull and boring, he was nothing like she'd expected Jack to be and it bothered her more than she cared to admit. Jack had been an almost mythical figure to her. Although she'd resisted, he'd worked his way into her psyche and the dark seductive figure had become a part of her. Donald Lucas not only didn't fit her expectations, but in some ways made Sam feel violated and even lost having her illusions so completely shattered.
Ordinarily her job afforded her a sense of peace, but even that had been taken away by the recent turn of events. Bailey harped at her for referring to Donald Lucas as Jack and chided her for not letting go. Her mentor simply didn't understand that she was struggling to reconcile Jack's identity with Donald Lucas. Something felt off with the whole situation and she couldn't let go because in her heart she felt like the game wasn't over.
When they discovered Donald had been in contact with someone in Otis, California and took off for the small town, Sam felt the closest to normal she had since they arrested Lucas. Later as Ed Boast led them to a murder scene and she saw a rose on the body, a strange sensation of hope rose up inside her. Her hopes were rapidly dashed as they discovered Dwight Parnell was responsible for that murder and the others that had ensued.
Anti-climactic and disappointing, Samantha's heart grew heavier than before. The discovery of her father's misdeeds proved to be more of a convenient cover for her dismay than creating any new distress for her. Donald Lucas was Jack and she had to accept it. Maybe the annonymity had given Donald an air of mystery but in real life he had none and never would. The man who'd aroused her body and soul didn't exist. Not really. Not anymore.
Secret desires she'd held close to her heart at night for years now faded as the reality of Donald Lucas dawned on her. Sitting in her room at the Otis Inn, Samantha wrapped her arms around herself and shivered. The dark seducer who'd captivated her was nothing more than an illusion and she was completely alone.
