Drabble: Away Too Long (Jack/Sam) FRC/G

Jul 03, 2007 10:04

m_ravensblood wanted a Skewed drabble and gave me the prompt of the lyrics to White Wedding. I chose "I've been away for so long. I've let you go for so long" as my inspiration and so, here we are. It's set post-Reunion, but Jack didn't die when Sam shot him.

Away Too Long

He had thought she’d be the same somehow, only more beautiful than ever, more beautiful than the bride. It had been a long time, though - so very long. Circumstances had prevented him from watching as new lines crept up around her eyes, kept hidden from him the reason why she looked a bit too pale and gaunt, and he wished he knew what, or who, had taken a toll on his Samantha.

Even as she watched her daughter walk down the aisle, sent her off to her own life with a man about whom Jack knew little and cared less - simply rejoicing in anything or anyone who freed his Samantha from the burdens of motherhood - Jack could see worry and trouble in her gaze, worry and trouble about things he had no knowledge of, that had nothing to do with him. All around her was swirling a life that had gone on without Jack of All Trades in it: it was a cloud, obscuring her from view, a wall that stood high and proud between them.

He walked back to his car, slowly - the cane still an unwelcome necessity after all the years and all the physical therapy. He got in and he drove away. It had been too long. She wasn’t his Samantha anymore. For the first time in more years than he cared to remember, Jack cried.

The End.
