I haven't updated Live Journal in a long while so I guess I should make this one count...
I won a photo contest! I won in the category of best of summer picture for my upclose macro mode photo of a beautiful yellow flower. I got a free roll of film, free developing, and most importantly... bragging rights at the CU Photo Club. It's kind of ironic though that I win a free roll of film and processing when I use a digital camera... oh well, maybe I can borrow a "real" camera from the Photo Club and try it real film.
I also got an email from OCRI (Ottawa Centre for Reseach and Innovation) from their Volunteers in Education Program saying that they've found a school that may work well for me. The school is just a five minute walk from my house and is grade 9 - 12. They're going to pass my file on to the school administration on Monday and hopefully have me placed by the end of next week.
I watched the election coverage on Thursday night and found it very exciting. The Liberals did form a majority gov't of about 70 some seats, while the PC got about 12, and the NDP fot 7 (losing their official party status). I found it kind of sad that while the NDPs popular vote went up about 4%, they lost seats in the legislature. I guess this means that elecotral reform might be a good idea. My good friend and housemate paul (see his LJ here
comedancing) has many good ideas on how to achieve this.
I got my first history quiz marks back. I got 70%... not bad, but not as good I was expecting. It was an online quiz of only 5 multiple choice questions. The questions were pretty horrible, very open to different interpretations. For example one question was:
Which of the following terms BEST describes the opinions Natives and Europeans held of each other in the early 1600s?
A. Wonder
B. Disdain
C. Respect
D. Hostile
Now how are you supposed to know? The reactions of both sides are probably different for different contacts between different cultures... also, we dont have anything that says "this is how I felt" in historical evidence as far as we have learned.... this is totally up to your own interpretation of the evidence as far as I am concerned.
Go ahead and put your choice in the comments section of this entry and I'll tell you if you're right or wrong according to the professor. BTW, I chose the answer that was "half" right and got 0.5 for this question. I'll tell you which once I picked in the comments sections or in a post tomorrow.
Now that I got that off my chest....
I've been playing Axis & Allies (which is a super cool, very complex board game based on WWII for those of you not in the loop) a lot! Paul and I started a game and I think we have played for about 6 hours total so far and we're still not near done. I'd say we're about half way complete. I think I'm winning so far... but things change quickly. I'm playing as the axis (Germany and Japan) and Paul is the allies (USA, Russia, UK). We've been leaving the game set up on our coffee table in the living room.... I expect it to be there till the end of the week because we play whenever we have a change but we're both pretty busy.
Only about 5 more days until Thanksgiving weekend! YES! (The Canadian Thanksgiving holiday for you Americans). I can't wait to see everyone and I'm especially looking forward to picking Lindsey up from the train station Thursday night. I'm going to have three special dinners that weekend...
1. With the Rubino side of my family
-lots of turkey, ham, vegetables, potato dishes, pumpkin, apple, and pecan pie
-two little kids under 4, four cousins, 1 cousin's wife, one grandma, an aunt and uncle, my parents, my brother and myself
2. With the Wood side of my family
-more turkey and ham, vegetables, potatos, and i'm not sure of the desserts
-my grandma on the other side, my uncle, his girlfriend, two cousins, my parents, and my brother
3. With the Lytles
-not sure what's on the menu but i'm sure it will be good and there will be lots of it!
-my girlfriend, her sister, her parents, her sister's boyfriend (Danny boy)
So... there is today's update on my life. I'm sorry for the lacking of LJ entries but Axis and Allies has taken over my life! Cya!
