In other news, I had a kind of WTF moment this weekend. I was reading a Bleach fic. Or, at least, I was trying to. It was apparently a very popular one, too. The first of five parts had 48 comments and the final part had 112 (though I estimate roughly half of these were the author saying things to the effect of "thank you for your comment"). And I had to drag myself through reading the first part. Like, it was literally pulling teeth, and I actually really like the pairing it was about. The author kept shifting pov. From Ichigo to Ishida and back again. Which, I honestly don't like as much as a fic that contains a single point of view, but it probably would have been fine if that was all. But the author also shifted between third and first person point of view, and I don't think that is acceptable at all. It made the fic unwieldy and distracting, and everything just seemed really vague. The fic starts out, and you're given a very short vignette about how apparently back in the day Ichigo and Ishida kissed once, and apparently it was TRUE LOVE. And they seem to spend the rest of the fic being obsessed with each other, and at one point I think Ishida was described as having full lips which made me lol. I got about halfway through the second part and had to give it up as a bad job, but what really irks me is that I don't understand why people liked it so much. It's like. Apparently Ishida had some kind of Insidious Plot. He alludes to it vaguely in his internal monologue. But if it's his internal monologue, one would expect more details. It's not as if he has to keep it secret from himself. And then you'd have some delightful dramatic irony, because you'd know something that Ichigo doesn't, and you'd be on the edge of your seat waiting for wtf Ishida is planning to do. But I got halfway through the second part and got sick of waiting for the writer to get to the damned point. Kay, done ranting.
