Bought a couple of comic book dvd's this week, and thought I'd share my thoughts on 'em.
HULK VS WOLVERINE / HULK VS THOR This is probably the most impressive Marvel Animated project to come out. The animation is a lot more consistent and fluid than some of the earlier releases (Next Avengers was woefully choppy). As far as story, the Hulk vs. Wolverine delivers to the fanboys who wanted to see a good Wolvie hack'n'slash - it delivers in spades, with plenty of blood and decapitations (this is NOT a kid's cartoon!!!), and a few surprises if you're familiar with the old Hulk #180-181 storyline (Wolvie's first appearance).
What I was not prepared for was for the Hulk vs. Thor story to steal the show! Thor and all his Norse co-stars take the stage in this one, especially Loki (fantastically evil in this one). It's good to see Thor getting his own spotlight (he's always been kind of a guest star in the past), and I'm hoping that this is a hint of things to come with the feature film that's set for next year.
My only complaint about this set is that Bruce Banner is rather over the top in his "Woe is me... I'm the Hulk... a monster!" spiel. I hope Marvel gives us the more balanced character in the future.
WONDER WOMAN Given the track record of Bruce Timm and co., who have done the more notable DC Animated projects (Batman: The Animated Series, Superman, Batman Beyond, Justice League), I was pretty sure that this was gonna be a good one. I just had no idea how good it was gonna be! I admit that I don't follow the Amazon Princess aside from the old 70s t.v. show, some reprints of the early 1940s comics, and her several animated appearances, but this one is very well done. The script is very tight, with moments that are funny and touching (there are some great moments with Steve Trevor trying to get Diana drunk, and some mishaps with the Lasso of Truth - let's just say there are some things that the Amazons didn't want to hear coming from a man's mind, and the fanboy in me got a little teary-eyed when Hippolyta first sculpts Diana out of clay and the gods give her life), the story is grand and epic (this one feels more like a feature film than the other direct-to-video releases), and the animation is absolutely beautiful... on the same level of some of the Disney direct-to-video releases. Hopefully, we will see a follow-up to this one, and hopefully the live action feature film will be as good, but next up is Green Lantern, finally getting his due. Don't pass this one up if you see it.
