I have to admit, I was really disappointed by Chick's destruction of the Binewski family midway, after finding Iphy slamming a pair of scissors into Elly's heart. The scene was so sudden, and it didn't seem like it was Chick at all, which disturbed the character purist that I am. I was upset at Chick's choice to destroy the Arturan home, despite the poor Chick endlessly blaming himself for the pain of others. I suppose the scene really displays the untapped power of Chick, to repel the idea that Chick isn't just a norm, and the twins' death is the veil lifted off his childhood. Also to capitalize on Arty getting what he deserves. Despite his own tortures, such as being terrified of talking meat, and narrowly avoiding something as miniscule as an ant hill, I felt throughout the novel that Chick was the voice of reason between the Binewski family, the shot of whisky to compliment the manipulative beer of Arty. Chick was always the clear-handed, the most supportive, the most innocent, and I suppose it killed Arty to have someone so young and so normal possess a greater power than his own feeling of self-righteousness. I suppose the mass burning of the Binewski midway was the climactic duel between good and evil of sorts, the inevitable final battle, and it's sad and justified that Chick be unable to control the fire and nearly take his entire family with him. My entire experience reading this was sheer amazement at how Arty had been able to manipulate an entire circus, amputate strangers, and be such a tyrant that his own parents have no idea of his actions? Chick had been forced to assume he was the cause for Ephy and Mumpo's death, but he shed his innocence and took action for the sick mutant mind of Arty, and he was wrong. So wrong.
