Report: Martha Loses Prison Decorating Contest

People magazine's Web site reported that Stewart and her team of fellow inmates lost a decorating contest at the West Virginia prison where she's being held for lying about a stock deal.

It said each team was given $25 worth of glitter, ribbons, construction paper and glue to put together a display depicting "Peace on Earth."

And we thought Martha was the best in the world with her decorations. . .  apparently, she’s not even the best in her own prison!!

Women Allegedly Offer Sex Services From Hot Dog Truck

BALDWIN, N.Y. -- Two New York women are in trouble for allegedly selling hot dogs with a little too much relish.

Police in Long Island said the women sold hot dogs and sodas from a truck, along with offers of sexual conduct on the side, for an extra charge.

Nassau County police said the women were arrested Wednesday afternoon for offering and agreeing to engage in sexual conduct with others "in return for a fee."

Iowa Couple Gives Rides Home On New Year's In Hearse

ATLANTIC, Iowa -- An Atlantic couple plans to give free rides home on New Year's Eve -- in their hearse.

Scott and Kathie Hockenberry own a funeral business. For the past two years, the couple have used their hearse to take New Year's Eve revelers home.

Scott said they have seen enough alcohol-related deaths and want to give partygoers the chance to ride in front of the hearse rather than the back.

Maybe every city in every state should adopt this practice.

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- Things you should not do at home: imitate Jimi Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival.

Attention all guitar players: Please stick with an air guitar until you can control a real one! You must pay more attention to the commercials that state “don’t try this at home”!

Nashua mayor charged with leaving accident
Lawyer Plans To File Motion To Discourage Prosecution Witness

MANCHESTER - Nashua Mayor Bernard A. Streeter Jr., accused of leaving the scene of a minor collision last October, claims the driver of the other car could bear as much blame for not exchanging information with him, Streeter's lawyer said yesterday.

Police said Streeter was driving his car on Pine Street in Manchester on Oct. 23. He allegedly tried to make a left turn from the right lane and struck a taxicab driven by Eddie Mercier. Streeter then allegedly left the scene without exchanging information.

At Thursday's hearing, defense attorney Adam Bernstein said he will file a motion that will put the taxicab driver on notice that he also could face charges of failing to provide the proper information.

"The same allegation could conceivably apply to Mr. Mercier, so Mr. Mercier could potentially have just as much liability as anyone else," Bernstein said.

The motion would alert Mercier, 56, of Manchester that he also faces potential criminal liability that could cause him to assert his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. If so, Mercier may not be able to testify against Streeter, Bernstein said.

Prosecutors said Mercier couldn't exchange information because Streeter left the scene of the accident. But Bernstein said that is just an allegation, and if Mercier decides he has something to lose, he could refuse to testify on Fifth Amendment grounds.

"It means the state can't present that witness to provide evidence," Bernstein said.

The prosecution would then have to go forward without its key witness. Bernstein said the only potential witness the defense has would be Streeter taking the stand in his own defense. While Bernstein is preparing for trial, he hasn't ruled out a plea bargain.

Mercier is a key witness for the prosecution and one of several the prosecutor could call to testify at trial, set for Feb. 10 in Manchester District Court.

Streeter, 69, of 26 Indiana Drive, Nashua, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a misdemeanor, after his city-issued 2002 Crown Victoria collided with a Queen City cab while both cars traveled north on the two-lane, one-way street.

Streeter, who appeared before Judge Norman Champagne during a pre-trial conference yesterday, had no comment after the hearing.

"Talk to my attorney," the mayor said.

According to court records, Streeter tried to make a left turn from the right lane when his car struck the taxi, damaging its right rear door.

Streeter got out of his car, pointed to his government plate and asked the cab driver if he knew who he was, court records said.

After a heated exchange in which Streeter allegedly used obscenities, the mayor got back in his car and drove to a nearby lot, where he parked his car, court records said.

Streeter then went to the Verizon Wireless Arena.

He did not talk to police until later that afternoon when he found his car had been towed, court records show.

Bernstein does not dispute an "accident" occurred. At issue, he said, is whether the mayor's behavior constitutes leaving the scene of an accident.

Is this lawyer just doing his job, to the best of his ability?  Threats like his would scare most civilians. Shouldn’t there be a law against that?
