A few days later, however, it's not nearly as funny. They haven't found the pilot at all. The front end of the plane is mostly missing, probably left behind them, farther down the mountain, so they didn't really expect to. Yesterday Scott Hamilton started coughing up blood and a few hours later he fell asleep and wouldn't wake up. None of them are doctors of any sort, but they've all seen enough episodes of ER to recognize internal bleeding.
They have a very small, very cold memorial service for him. Mostly it consists of chattering teeth and everyone doggedly not mentioning the fact that a one-off skating show in Alaska had been Scott's idea. Later, Evan sits by the gaping hole where the plane's tail used to be and looks out at the blizzard slowly covering his body up.
"So you think Flexjet will still sponsor you?"
Evan had apparently drifted off because suddenly Jeff is right there and Evan jumps about a foot when he speaks. He relaxes quickly enough, thought, because Jeff is smiling down at him. He looks like a yeti, all furry parka lining and teeth. Evan almost smiles back. Eventually Jeff sits next to him, closer than Evan would normally let anyone, but Evan doesn't protest. They're all way past being uncomfortable if it means shared body heat.
"They're going to sponsor all of us for the rest of our lives," Evan tells him, every bit of his voice as earnest as he can make it, thinking about Yuki and his team back in LA, probably already harassing the national guard or the Mounties or something. The lawsuit is going to be epic.
"Go get 'em, Tiger," Jeff throws an arm around his shoulder, bulky in his giant jacket, and pats Evan on the head.
It's possible they're all going a little insane.

They have a medical kit. They also have blankets and a ton of warm clothes from everyone's luggage. Water isn't a problem; they can melt snow pretty easily for all that they need, but one of the issues with losing both the front and back parts of your plane is that's where all the food is kept.
Four days in and the younger skaters start fainting. It hits Adam first and hardest; he'd been sick with just a common cold before they left, but now he's pale and shaky, sleeping most of the day. Mirai clings to Evan that night and is so groggy in the morning that it takes a few tries for her to open her eyes. This is so unlike Mirai that Evan finally starts to be afraid.
It still takes him the better part of the day to get up his nerve, so he sits with the others, huddled up for extra warmth. Outside, the blizzard that probably made them crash is still raging. Ben has a book of navigational maps he found somewhere spread out in the middle of their little circle and has been looking at it for the past few hours like it's the most interesting thing he can find. It might well be, actually. Concentrating on not freezing to death is very boring. "We're probably in the Rockies, somewhere east of Alaska," Ben says, pointing out a bright pink, bumpy-looking spot on the topographical map.
Tanith is snoring against Ben's shoulder, so everyone turns to look at Jeffrey as their resident Canadian. He grins big at them. "Welcome to the Yukon! Sorry the tour isn't more interesting."
They talk a little more in hushed tones, small talk as if this situation is perfectly normal. The transponder beeps every now and then in its orange crash case, propped against the wall-that-used-to-be-the-ceiling. They'd hauled it out of what was left of the front of the cabin section yesterday, and everyone stops to stare at it for a minute every single time it deeps, like the top of it's about to pop off and magically transport them elsewhere.
Isn't the little black box supposed to be black?
Yeah. Evan needs to fix this before his half-frozen brain starts showing him giant, icy smoke monsters or something.
