Despite all we've read, seen and heard about R.E.M., there are a bunch of things fans never get to see: the band seconds before they take the stage, for example. Michael Stipe's makeup removal after a show. Peter Buck's father-daughter moments. The food they eat on tour.
Photographer David Belisle has quietly been documenting scenes like these for years, and now he has compiled the most captivating snapshots in a new book, R.E.M.: Hello (Chronicle, $29.95). The work is a coffee-table must-have for any fanatic (like me), and it includes an introduction by Stipe and captions by band members.
What makes this book stand out? For one thing, Stipe, Buck and Mike Mills really allowed Belisle into their world -- he's not just another rock journalist trying to capitalize on their fame. You'll see intimate shots of family, friends and, um, Stipe in the shower. It all has a simple, honest feel about it.
Last week Belisle and Stipe signed books and met fans at Book Soup in Los Angeles. Thanks to Anthony Amove for taking this pic -- they'll also be signing at McNally Robinson June 15 in New York:
R.E.M.: Hello arrives in stores this week.
So...a pic of Michael Stipe in the shower? Awesome. I'm all about lusting after inaccesible gay men. =P
