"I built a new desktop, partly with a friend's old parts:
- 4GB DDR3-1333 RAM (Corsair XMS3)
- AMD Phenom II X4 955 (his old CPU, maybe I'll get an FX-8350 sometime)
- AMD Radeon HD 7850 (ASUS -- I dunno if this is 1 or 2GB yet. I can't boot the system, see below.)
- Gigabyte 970A-UD3 motherboard (He gave me an MSI board but those things are designed like shit and a pin broke so I had to get a Gigabyte, whoo)
- APEX Vortex 3620 case...? I'm seeing this listed as all USB 2.0, yet mine seems to have two 3.0 ports. Huh.
- the 500GB WD drive in this tower will go in there
- as will the BD-RE drive (a Pioneer)"
This computer is now up, running, and my main driver. Let's actually go into detail on the build:
- 4GB DDR3-1333 RAM (Corsair XMS3)
- AMD Phenom II X4 955
- AMD Radeon HD 7850 (ASUS, 1GB model.)
- ASUS M5A97 R2.0 motherboard
- APEX Vortex 3620 case
- 500GB WD drive (7200RPM -- I do not really care for SSD storage.)
- Pioneer BD-RE drive from the old tower.
- Corsair CX600M PSU.
Here's a couple fun facts about this machine!
- 4GB of RAM is rather inadequate these days with some software. I've resorted to alternative methods of doing some things and other applications to much more easily fit within these constrictions. (Pale Moon instead of Firefox, nixing Chrome almost entirely and using VLC to play media, etc.)
- My 970A-UD3 had two bad RAM slots! I had no way to test multiple sticks, but my stick tested fine in two slots (over about a day) and bad in two slots, so... yeah, I figure it was bad slots on the board.
- My Radeon HD 7850 was dead on arrival, so to speak. I had to RMA it. ASUS was very helpful, and I received my card days ahead of schedule. (I'm now running this GPU, although I was using my old 9500GT prior)
- I CAN PLAY GAMES NOW WHAT WHAT WHAT IS THIS. I'm not a massive gamer, but being able to is so fucking great.
Have a couple miscellaneous thoughts, too:
I've been trying to clean things up a bit as well. Making some slow progress.
I kinda wish I could meet a couple people, as of the past few days. Shame I can't afford to...
