This weekend I took James on my roof. I hadn't been up there for a year.
We found this bike near my apartment. If we're friends on tumblr you might have already read about this, so sorry for repeating myself. It’s an Astra “Tour-de-France” manufactured in France in the 70s. I’m both excited and a little worried about it. My dad’s a bike expert so I’m gonna have him take a look at it for me.
Pros:
- It looks nice. I love the color and all the little vintage details.
- I would benefit from a light road bike. My other bike is an Electra “Betty”, which I love to death, but I ride it every day and it’s really too cumbersome for everyday use.
- I wouldn’t be afraid to lock up the Astra outside of a friend’s house or a store - a luxury I don’t feel with the Electra.
- It’s free!
Cons:
- It’s a little too big for me judging by the standover height.
- The gears and back wheel are rusted.
- The back tire is totally shredded, and the back brakes are broken.
- I’d have to replace the boy seat with a girl one if I don’t want to murder my poor vagina.
- I’ve never ridden a road bike. Every bike I’ve ever owned was a cushy cruiser. So I think getting used to the totally different body posture and braking system would be like learning how to ride a bike all over again.
- From what I’ve read online, replacing French parts from the 70s is no easy task.
- An initial call to my dad confirmed that it might be too expensive to fix up, but he says he’ll still take a look at it.
This is James in Chinatown a couple weeks ago. I meet him there for lunch sometimes.
This weekend we wandered around Divisadero and went into some places I'd never been in before. I didn't even realize there are some great antique stores there. It's almost a blessing I don't have any money, because I certainly found plenty of things to spend it on. The next day James' friends from L.A. came up and we went to Napa for a nice, hazy day of wine and food.
I picked this up for $1 and I'm reading it now. I'm not too far into it yet though.
Lately I have lost all motivation to make art. So when I woke up this morning I forced myself to draw. Man, I'm really rusty! But this is the end result. I drew (most of) Monica Vitti's outfits from the movie L'Eclisse.
