Went to see it last Thursday, and I thought I'd better finish my review entry and post it as all you US-ians are getting your midnight showings in
( Read more... )
I would have wished a little bit more warmth (Cap&Tony, *cough*) but for the beginning, what we got works really well. The odds really weren't in favor for them to pull Avengers off at all.
(And I'm so happy they fixed Black Widow. Sure, ScarJo is too young and really not athletic enough but good writing and cleverly done action bits do wonders. Gosh, I was so *worried* about this you wouldn't believe. :)
I kept waiting Steve to pick up Thor's hammer the whole movie.
(If they don't bring in Carol for Avengers 2, I'll cry.)
Actually, from what I've heard, we may owe a lot to Scarlett Johansson--she has absolutely refused to let the character be sidelined, and made it absolutely clear that if she was going to wear the catsuit, they were going to make damn well sure she did some ass-kick action scenes in it.
Good for her. I wish more actresses did that (assuming they could). Though, I am a little bit concerned that Widow being sidelined was an option.
It's now how much a character like this gets action scenes, it's how those scenes are done. It's not enough that they're asskicky and cool, the audience needs to be able to believe in them. (I'm sure they thought that the Widow scenes of Iron Man 2 were totally great too.) And since she doesn't have the body for them, they really need to do miracles.
Eh, as someone who's become increasingly disinterested by Steve/Tony over the years, I was quite pleased that the Steve-Tony dynamic didn't become this huge thing that ate up the movie. Not that it'll stop being the fandom juggernaut anytime soon, but maybe we'll get a little more variety now, especially since there were so many pairs of characters that had tons of chemistry.
ScarJo's aesthetics weren't an issue for me. I just wanted to know if she could act the role, and she did with gusto!
Re: Steve and Thor's hammer -- c'mon, you know they need to keep stuff for sequels!
If AKA Jessica Jones ever gets off the ground, I know Carol will be in that, and supposedly it'll be in the same universe as MCU? Whether being on a TV show will help or hurt her chances, though, idk.
Even if you're not into Steve/Tony, they are (in a non-shippy way) the core of Avengers. It can't be ignored.
But, yes, it's the *first* movie and it has to show the connections between them all, introduce people/ideas, all that. (I personally loved the Widow&Hulk stuff. I hope they continue that.)
Yes. She acted well (especially nice in that company), wasn't there to be a romantic interest, and the possibly tragic past wasn't an annoying sob fest. Huge win in comic book movies.
And really, at least she wasn't rail thin. Maybe the lack of muscles is for a reason. Who'd think she could throw down when she looks like a pin up.
The sequel better have Widow's special weaponry too. :)
Don't make me hopeful with this Jessica Jones stuff. My heart can't take it.
Well, no, but there's a great wide gulf of possibility between "ignored" and "way overplayed," and I was very glad Whedon hit that middle bit in just the right spot.
I also enjoyed the Widow+Hulk stuff! And I saw her use her stingers a couple of times in the big battle, but hopefully we'll see more of that in the sequels.
Maybe Natasha's just one of those women who gets toned but doesn't really bulk up. IDK, I do think it's an issue that women heroes in visual fiction are only very rarely allowed to be visibly buff like their male counterparts, but at the same time if an actress of whatever build can sell me on her action sequences, I'm not going to worry about it too much.
Haha, I hear you. Okay, no more Jessica Jones taunting, I promise!
Whedon deserves extra points for the balance of the cast. Hard thing to do and it was nearly flawless.
She used her stingers somewhere?!? I really need to see the movie again asap.
I'd have loved seeing ScarJo's softer body type for someone like Wanda. Anybody with powers, really. (I wish the comics did more than one body type for female super heroes. :/)
