My bank charged me $35 for an overdraft the other day. Seems that the banking business day ends at 2pm, but the business day for the ATM ends at 5pm. Why this is, I have no idea - other than the possibility of soaking people like myself for 35 bucks a pop.
Basically, I deposited money at 2:54 in the afternoon inside the bank, then realized it would be nice to get cash out to make the mortgage payment, so I hit the ATM, which showed my account balance as having the total amount of my paycheck available. When I deposit my paycheck in the ATM, the funds don't show as being available until the check clears.
I had a long, slightly snarky conversation with the account manager at the Kansas Union branch and ended up getting the NSF charge refunded, and got myself signed up for overdraft protection and online banking. Yes, I'm 28. Yes, I've had the account for well over ten years. Yes, I am computer-savvy. Yes, I'm quite lazy and unmotivated when it comes to shit like this.
