So, as part of my Contributing Editor gig, I'm supposed to pitch 4-6 events per week, and then write up about the same number. Some weeks are slower than others, and sometimes I get overworked/lazy and don't pitch enough - in which case Matt, my managing editor, assigns me a few open listing to cover.
He's been reading my pitches and writing for the last year or two, and generally knows what sorts of genres and types of events I like to cover and can knowledgeably write about. However, this week's batch of events has hit an eclectic high point. In case anyone's interested in the depth/breadth of what I have to cover, today I was assigned:
1. The Hives/The Donnas (ok, arguably, I pitch a lot of indie, punk, garage, and girl-power type stuff, and I wrote a feature on the Donnas for a different pub last year. But the Hives? Really? They're still around?)
2. Velvet Goldmine screening at local arty rep house (I'm impressed with Matt's intuition here - I love me some mod boys and glam-rockers in tight pants, gay innuendo included)
3. Wondercon - a convention of comics nerds and sci-fi junkies (I think Matt gave me this one because I covered last year's Alternative Press Expo, which draws a somewhat similar crowd and is produced by the same group. This group also produces the huuuuge Comicon down in San Diego every year. Then again, maybe Matt just thinks I'm a huge freaking nerd.)
4. Alvin Ailey Dance Theater (I actually pitched this one.)
