Ryeowook finds Heechul smoking in a corner of the parking lot the night before he enlists. He’s leaning against the wall with a cigarette dangling from his fingers and his nails tapping on the touchscreen of his phone. It’s cold, and Heechul’s wearing a beanie tucked over his ears just right. If Ryeowook squints he can pretend Heechul’s hair is just hidden by dark knit wool.

“Hyung,” he says quietly, and huddles a little bit more into the hoodie he’s wearing, something he grabbed off a chair on his way out. It’s plain blue and Ryeowook isn’t even sure who it belongs too. It smells simple, like the soap they use on all their clothing.

Heechul looks up at him, and the wind whistles. Ryeowook tugs his hood up, and the ash from Heechul’s cigarette blows up into the air and dances on the breeze. Ryeowook thinks It looks a little like snow.

Cigarettes remind Ryeowook of Jongwoon. He curls his fingers into the sleeves of the hoodie and rolls the lint against a nail. Heechul slips his phone into a pocket and his nails glint dully in the harsh light of the streetlamps. Ryeowook can see oil shining on Heechul’s skin.

Ryeowook realizes suddenly that he’s not wearing makeup. He touches his fingertips to his face and wonders if Heechul can see the faint scars on his cheeks and the swollen circles around his eyes. Heechul presses the cigarette out against a pole and it leaves a burnt black circle that fades a little every time the wind makes Ryeowook shiver.

“Sorry,” he mutters, and Ryeowook feels that little lift in his chest he gets when ever Heechul honestly tries.

“It’s okay,” he says, and it’s not even a lie. Sometimes in China Ryeowook will breathe deep when a someone walks by blowing lungfuls of smoke into the air and think of hyungs and early days and skinny boys crouched against metal dumpsters with their hands cupped over cheap plastic lighters. Ryeowook frowns a little, and shifts on his feet.

“Hyung--” he starts, but Heechul cuts him off.

“Are you in love with Jongwoon,” he asks directly, and Ryeowook blinks.

“He’s a man,” he stutters, and laughs. Heechul rolls a shoulder.

“Hankyung is a man,” he says, and then snorts. “Of sorts.” Ryeowook laughs, a sudden shout of surprised amusement. Heechul’s teeth flash in a lightning fast smile. Heechul is turning to the side, searching for the flicker that caught the corner of his eye when Ryeowook slips his arms around his waist, hipbones like sharp points against his wrists.

Heechul is wearing some long sleeved shirt that is soft under Ryeowook’s cheek, and his shoulder blade lies against his jaw.

“I’ll be back, Ryeowook-ah,” he says, and Ryeowook presses his nose against the small damp spot and sniffles wetly.

“I love you hyung,” he says quietly, and Heechul turns to give him a proper hug, fingers pressed between the vertebrae of Ryeowook’s spine. Ryeowook sighs a long blown out breath and drops his head close enough to hear Heechul’s heart beat vibrate through his chest.

Heechul knows Ryeowook is a little in love with everyone.
