Advent Calendar - Day 24

... Almost there!

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the base,
Not an airman was stirring, not a toe out of place.
The iris was closed over the Gate with care,
In defense of the world we hold so dear.

The General was nestled all snug in his bed,
With visions of budget-bonuses dancing in his head.
And Siler with his wrench, and Walter with his hat,
Had just settled down for a coffee and a chat.

When down in the gateroom there arose such a clatter,
They sprang from their posts to see what was the matter.
Away to the windows they flew like a flash,
Raised the blast door, and waited for a splash.

The gate, like a beacon of hope in the night,
Bathed the room below in a shimmering blue light.
When, what to their wondering eyes should appear,
But SG-1, intact, and waving the all-clear.

With a testy old Colonel, sarcastic and witty,
A Major, intelligent, deadly, and pretty,
A linguist-anthropologist-archeologist extraordinaire,
And an alien solider, a Jaffa so rare.

And although they saluted, and bowed, and waved,
The General and his aide no signal they gave,
For the team to return, whole and unharmed,
Made they all feel rather alarmed.

“Colonel,” Hammond called, with a voice quite stern,
“What’s the meaning of this, your punctual return?”
The Colonel smirked, removed his cap, and scratched his head,
“I know, sir, for once, Daniel’s not dead!”

“The planet we went to - P3X-519,
Wanted us to leave, and we thought it was time.
After all, they gave us more than you can conceive,
I’m telling you, Sir, just right for Christmas Eve!”

The Major chimed in, her eyes twinkling and bright,
“Naquadah for the reactor, the composition’s just right!”
Daniel added, with an explanation long and complicated,
“A book of translations of languages antiquated.”

Teal’c gravely added, in a voice serious and low,
“A laser powered weapon, that deals quite a blow.”
The Colonel stood there silent and grinning,
“How’s that, sir?” He asked, sure of their winnings.

“And you, Jack?” over intercom, asked General Hammond,
Making O’Neill think the floor needed to be examined.
Then Major Carter’s cheeks turned a rosy hue,
And Daniel took the question as his cue.

“Well, you see, General,” he began, with a voice rather odd,
"The culture there required we put up a facade,
For Sam’s safety, we needed to pretend she was married,
And, well, Jack, was tired of us being harried,

“So, it happened pretty quickly, before I was sure,
The language, you see, was pretty obscure.”
The Colonel cleared his throat, causing a pause,
While the General decided it was another lost cause.

“General,” he said, “To avoid any further strife,
The gift I got, was Carter - as my wife!”
In the moment of stunned silence that followed,
It seemed as though all tongues had been swallowed.

That is, until, Jack made his point clear,
By grabbing Carter, and holding her near.
Then a hubbub arose, as he dipped her and kissed her,
Making up for the time he’d had to resist her.

And she kissed him back, and ran her hands through his hair,
All those years of longing had been hard to bear.
Eventually, they started to head for the door,
But Jack leaned back in, to add one thing more,

“General, I’m afraid I going to have to retire,
As for Samantha Carter my heart’s all afire.”
And then, just before they rushed out of sight,
They yelled, “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

Merry Christmas Eve, everyone!
