office politics

So I've been neglecting this journal lately. Hell, I've been neglecting sleep lately. So much to do. WOULD YOU PEOPLE STOP WITH THE PARTIES ALREADY.  Except mine. Y'all have got to come to my birthday dinner tomorrow.

Working full-time in an office is . . . well, a lot like it was last time I did it. But (so far) better than working full-time in retail. There's the money for one thing. And the not having aching feet at the end of the day. Even when I wear heels. And the no customers thing, that's my favourite bit.

There's still the fat-hating, though. My boss, who is extremely thin, has decided that "The focus of our group is going to be health."  Realy? Coz here was I thinking we were all about managing contractors. But there you go.  She made some joke (to one of the contractors we supposedly manage) that I "don't know it yet, but it's a condition of employment." I raised my eyebrows and said "We might have to talk about this." I really don't want to get into that conversation at work. I really, really don't. I know she thinks she's well-intentioned and concerned about people's health (or at least, is dressing it up with that acceptable face), but NO!

The other thing that I'm finding both frustrating and fascinating is the BLATANT HOMOEROTICISM dressed up as not-that-there's-anything-wrong-wth-that homophobic joking.  We're a small office of women in a large company of mainly men, and there's such a . . . vibe isn't the right word . . . there's such a lot of joking. Most of it was between two people, one of whom has left (she's the one I'm replacing). They flirted constantly and would jokingly 'molest' each other (and threaten to sue for harrasment). Also, they continuously speculated that the boss must be a Lesbian any time she did anything nice or was thoughtful toward us. Oh yeah, move along, there's nothing to see here . . . heheheh!

work, queer, fat
