Bluefreedom

Holly Hammond and I are frustrated by the election's outcome. We need to DO SOMETHING in order to make ourselves feel more effectual, less castrated (sorry, I just read Reading Lacan). Here's our solution. Offer your criticism about any information included below. We want to make this effort as strong as possible at the outset.

THE BLUE RIBBON CAMPAIGN

Pledge to “do more than you did over the past four years” to ensure the continuance of our personal freedoms.

--------------------------------------------------

Before Senator Kerry conceded, Wolf Blizter of CNN introduced a man the evening of November 2nd who claimed that liberals will feel alienated if Kerry does not win. The gentleman cited astute observations about the reasons why Democrats register as such. The gist of the man’s claim: it’s not as simple as the war in Iraq, but something less concrete. It’s that if you believe in personal freedoms, you simply can’t vote for George Bush.

We have spoken to many friends, fellow graduate students, parents, undergraduate students, and professors who all share our dismay regarding the re-election of George W. Bush. To combat feelings of depression, anxiety, and perhaps fear the continued reign of Bush might prompt US liberals to experience, we feel it’s time to create a solidarity of our own and display to the country that liberals will continue to offer a voice and opinion that must be heard and navigated. What we hope this campaign might come to mean is continued support for other groups labeled “minority;” we pledge not only to fight for our personal freedoms but to support marginalized groups as well. Even if the election seems to have proved that Democrats and liberals are the minority in the United States of America, we can still stand up for our rights and wear our opinions with pride.

A blue ribbon campaign already exists. Wearing a blue ribbon means you support free speech online. However, it is our belief that because blue is the color assigned to represent the Democratic party, thereby representing the majority of liberals in the USA, the agenda of the blue ribbon campaign might be expanded to include more than online free speech. Rather, what we might do is wear a blue ribbon in support of the liberal agenda.
