valentine's day rant

can i just say that i hate the mentality that valentine's day is only about one relationship, one that is romantic in nature and only with one person? it becomes another anniversary for couples (do you really need ANOTHER anniversary) and an excuse for singles to to vent supressed anger that they feel about being single - note: this is not single bashing. OMG THAT IS OPPOSITE OF MY PURPOSE. i'm just saying that our society has this thing about romantic relationships being neccessary for fulfillment and valentine's day is a counter-culture-type acceptable time for singles to vent about this pressure. what i'm saying is, i understand the happy couples and the bitter singles, but sometimes they just get on my nerves.

what really makes me mad though is that people just accept that, all the time. there is NO RULE saying that you can't make the holiday into what you want. just because the rest of society decides something does not mean you have to pay any attention whatsoever. you can be stronger than that! you can ignore the sappy cards and soroity boys walking with flowers! you make the choice about whether you let that get to you or not. those things don't have anything to do with the people you love and the many people who love you. personally, my favorite part of valentine's day is getting a valentine from my dad. that and the arts and crafts. i love giving valentines to my friends! it's sad that for the past several years of my life i haven't had the time/opportunity to do so. those are my traditions from my childhood, from the majority of my life when i didn't have a "significant other" relationship, and those are the ones that I really care about. valentine's day is about the people i love. not just one person, many people.
