Master blaster Roddick eases through opener

June 21, 2005
LONDON (AFP) - American second seed Andy Roddick hammered down 14 aces as he beat Jiri Vanek of the Czech Republic 6-1, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 to reach the second round of Wimbledon.

Roddick, last year's beaten finalist, will face either Croatia's Ivo Karlovic, who he beat in the Queen's final last week, or Daniele Bracciali of Italy for a place in the third round.

The 22-year-old, who took the first set off Roger Federer in the 2004 final before the Swiss star ran away for his second successive title, was hardly troubled by Vanek who has only won one tour match all year.

He raced through the first set courtesy of breaks in the third, fifth and seventh games in just 19 minutes as Vanek struggled to put his racquet on the ball.

The world number 100 made a fight of it in the second set but once he had lost the tie-breaker, his hopes of a recovery quickly slipped away.

Roddick took just 22 minutes to finish the third set to keep up his record of never having lost in the first round here in five visits.
