At what point do we really know someone? Most people would probably say never truly, but I'm not really thinking about truly. What I'm wondering is, at what point are we well enough acquainted with someone to know what for that specific person is "in character" for them to do, and what isn't? Because after a while it's very clear.

Perhaps, like most such things, it's gradual. We meet someone for the first time, and each successive time that we see/talk with/observe him or her, we get a better feel for who s/he is, what s/he is about, and what is the kind of the thing that s/he commonly or at least occasionally will do. So when do we feel ourselves capable (and that shouldn't have the connotation of any sort of arrogance) of, if not predicting the behavior of the person, then being able to recognize them doing something out of character?
