It isn't every week that you voluntarily resigned from the most elite X-Wing squadron in the galaxy and received orders sending you to a completely different galaxy all in one fell swoop.
Unfortunately for Gavin Darklighter, it was happening to him this week.
"But, sir-"
Gavin's quick protest was cut off when Wedge waved a hand. "These are your orders. Is there a problem?"
Gavin resisted the urge to pout and to start listing every single problem, no matter how idiotic, that came to mind. He knew Wedge wasn't sending him away because of anything he'd done wrong. There were orders and there were reasons said orders were being issued.. That didn't mean Gavin had to like them.
"I'm a pilot, Commander," Gavin said. A weak retort but strong at the same time. He was a pilot. Ever since leaving Tatooine, Rogue Squadron was all he'd known. The cockpit of his X-Wing was where he felt most comfortable, most at ease.
And know he was being ordered away from it.
"You will always be a pilot, Gavin," Wedge said, voice softening. "And there are reasons you're being sent to this school."
"Iceheart?" Gavin asked, voice dark with anger. "What about her?"
Wedge hesitated slightly. "We're going after her."
"Without me?" Gavin blurted out.
"It's a possibility, Gavin," Wedge said gently. "We are going after her. If you're not here, I am sorry. But we have to go after her."
It hadn't been that long ago, not very long at all, when the Lusankya erupted from underneath Coruscan't surface, tearing apart Coruscan't surface, devastating the planet and killing millions.
It'd been horrible. Gavin didn't want to be left out of her pursuit. He wanted to see her caught, imprisoned. She deserved that and more.
Gavin frowned, unable to stop himself. "Will I be able to come back?"
Wedge smiled and said, "We're not letting them keep you."
He tried to smile but it didn't reach his eyes. It barely reached his mouth. "I just feel like I should be here. After everything that's happened: the Krytos disease, Captain Celchu, Corran..." His voice trailed off into a quiet whisper, eyes glued to his boots.
Wedge stepped forward and placed a firm hand on Gavin's shoulder. "I know you want to be here, Gavin. And I want you to be here. But, you need to be there now. It's not permanent. We're not giving your ship away to the first person that walks in here."
Gavin resisted the urge to tuck his hands in his pockets and kick at the ground. He was a pilot, a member of Rogue Squadron. With that in mind, he managed to snap off a quick albeit non enthusiastic salute.
"Yes, sir."
"Safe travels, Gavin."
Gavin nodded, turned and departed. He tried not to think of Bror Jace who'd left one day and hadn't come back. He did think of Asyr because he was unable to stop himself. They'd barely gotten a chance to know each other and now he was leaving.
It wasn't fair. And he knew he sounded like a petulant child but he didn't care. It wasn't fair.
He had to go pack. He had to say goodbye.
