This letter was fucking hilarious. It's from my orientation leader at
college--
READ:
Hey D-----!
My name's Kristine and I'm your Porter slug (a.k.a. orientation leader) for
next year. First of all, I'd like to apologize because this letter should be
on paper but UPS decided against that. Second, welcome to Porter! I
guarantee that you will have an amazing time here. There is always something
going on, what with all of the crazy art students. Get ready for ridiculous
water fights, late-night glow-in-the-dark games of capture the flag, and, if
you're lucky, a power outage that will result in a mass rave complete with
fire dancers and glow sticks lasting until 2 am. That wasn't exaggerated, it
really happened last year. I have no idea why someone happened to have 200
glow sticks, but that's crazy art kids for you.
Basically, as your orientation leader, I'm charged with writing you this
letter and giving you a tour of the college on move in day. I'll make this
tour quick, since I know you'll have better things to do. I'm also here to
answer any questions you may have about anything throughout the year. You
can face/space me, just search for my email
(k----------------m.)
I live on campus, in the apartments right next to the dorms, and am happy to
help out with anything.
Now for some tips:
I highly recommend attending the "Boardwalk Frolic." For $20 you get to go
to the Boardwalk with all of the other incoming freshmen and you get
unlimited ride access as well as some Boardwalk dollars for food and
whatnot. It's a lot of fun, and you can get your ticket on the Baytree
Bookstore (that's UCSC's bookstore) website.
Also, for the first week of school you should leave your door open when
you're in your room. Getting to know your hallmates will come in very handy
if you ever need to borrow anything.
Remember that incense and candles aren't allowed. I know they drill this
into you, but if you're the one who sets of the fire alarm at 5 am everyone
will hate you.
Things I recommend bringing:
-an extra lamp since the dorm lighting isn't very good
-weird clothes for the plethora of costume parties
-a flashlight for midnight hikes/exploration of the porter caves/ blackouts
-disposable plates/cups/utensils are always really useful
-posters and other stuff to decorate the walls, tacks are ok
-shower sandals because you never know with these showers
-if you play a musical instrument definitely bring it, it will come in handy
-a small dustbuster can be useful. there are vacuums but they rarely work
I think that's about all I have to tell you, but feel free to email me or
look me up on facebook or myspace if you have any questions.
