Yesterday my step-daughter and son (both 8) and my husband (the coach) competed in a regional problem-solving competition called Destination Imagination and out of 17 teams competing against them, they ranked 3rd and get to go onto states! This is most excellent because
- this was their first year as a team
- this was my husband's first year coaching
- they were all expecting to come in last with a goal of being in higher than the bottom five!
- the team was sabotaged by a way-over-competitive team at our school who took on the role of coordinator but then did not coordinate, refused to disseminate information to us, did not mentor us or help in any way, completely ignored us and got all bent out of shape when we happened to chose the same problem as her team, etc. So the whole thing was literally an up-hill battle. The team didn't even come together until November, didn't chose a problem until January, didn't register for the regional competition until a few weeks ago, didn't have group t-shirts until I scrambled the day before the competition to come up with anything that might represent the school. Amazing that they pulled this off!
- they never ever practiced one portion of the competition so went in completely dry and still pulled it off although the weakness dropped them down a few spots when otherwise they would have gotten first or second place!
I'm so proud of my kiddos, my husband, all the parents who stuck around through it all and didn't get frustrated, etc. I can't WAIT to go on to states next month!!!
