A thread is a string of comments, and subsequent replies... Ie.. if you reply to this, that is our discussion thread. Your comments have x's because you can delete them if you want. you can delet anyone elses (unless thay post them in your journal... then you can do what you want LOL)
I use the LJ scrap book for pictures... if you have a sponsored account, or a paid account, you get one of these, and you can upload pictures to it as you post through the LJ post page (LJ has help pages for the common tasks).
Lj ettiquette? Be courteous and friendly & you won't have a problem. feel free to comment on anything that takes your interest. Friend people, say hello when you do, just so people know why you popped up on their list. Explore... check out other peoples friends lists to find communities and friends that have similar interest. If you want to know something ask... (just like you are doing) people are friendly & here to help *hugs*

The banner thing can be either easy or tricky depending on your layout... (I think this layout is one of the easier ones). You do that through http://www.livejournal.com/customize/
It's fun to play with these things, and helps your journal to feel more like home: A true reflection of you.
