Winter has seemed to stretch on forever, and though the daylight hours are starting to get longer again, it still seems like they only last for about 15 minutes, and most of that is spent under dark snow clouds and white-out conditions. I'm starting to get a bit of cabin fever from being inside so much (and I have been getting out and snowshoeing- I even went skiing last week)and it's crappy enough that going out isn't much fun. That's right, it's February. The blah month. The doldrums of the calendar, the humdrum days, and soon enough the "bah, humbug" day for me as well. Yup, I'm starting to see too much Valentines day mass marketing crap floating around.
Not that I've got anything major against Valentine's Day itself. Ok, I'll admit, I have some minor gripes (
http://six-eight-ten.livejournal.com/21022.html) but that was a long time ago, I'm feeling much better now. My main problem with Valentines Day is the same problem a lot of Holidays have- the crass mass-market commercialization of it. This is nothing new, it's been happening since oh, before I was born (long, long before). It just seems that with Valentines Day, it's just a little more in your face. Maybe it's the glaring pink everywhere (though I'm not sure why that stands out more than Christmas's flashing red and green and music blasted at high decibels). I can't seem to escape it, it's already everywhere I look. I just want to say, "Valentine's Day... get a room." Sheesh.
Sigh. February. I'm starting to make some plans to go to Tokyo in April, try to hit the hanami season. But April is a ways off yet. I need a vacation from February, I think. Can we just jump straight into March?
