I saw two incredible bands perform live tonight: Local H and Electric Six. Local H is one of my very favorite bands of all time and Electric Six is one of my favorites of those I'm still still getting familiar with.
First up was an opening act called Cold Cash Machine (I think?) who must have been selected by the venue and turned out to be one of the most miserable opening acts I've ever witnessed. They were generic and boring, trying really hard to pull off the pop-rock-band-with-a-country-bar-vibe that's popular these days, sounding like a wannabe Gin Blossoms. Just trust me when I say it was bad.
Now I've been wanting to see Local H for years and they did not disappoint. I would've liked a longer set, but it would've taken another hour for them to include all the songs I wanted to hear. They went on before Electric six 'cause E6 is getting pretty well known, especially here in their home state of Michigan. Anyway, it's truly amazing how much sound they get out of just the two members and Scott Lucas (vocalist/songwriter/guitarist-bassist) has an excellent voice.
Electric Six blew my mind with their stage presence and are seriously a must-see for anyone who has the opportunity. Great music and entertaining as hell. If you want a good laugh, look up the videos for songs like "Gy Bar" and "Danger! High Voltage". My only problem is, having seen them live, their recorded material pales in comparison.
They're playing in Chicago, Local H's hometown, on New Year's Eve where they flip flop and Local H is headlining -- if I could afford it, I'd go. I still need to see a headlining set from Local H, after all.
Oh, so Scott Lucas, addressed the crowd, saying Electric Six' debut is the best rock album since The Cult's Electric in 1987. This was excellent because we're all fans of The Cult and they're one of my top two favorite bands of all time. Also, I drove and we listened to one of my mixed CD's on the way there, on which we heard INXS' "Never Tear Us Apart" just before we arrived at the venue. I'd never seen Electric Six before, so I had no idea it was going to happen, but they covered "Never Tear Us Apart" for a couple of minutes in the middle of one of their own songs. We came back here and had a drink with the hard rock satellite music channel on the TV, which is tradition after a concert for us. Deftones were playing and I commented that I wonder if they're still working on a new album, and then mentioned I've also been hearing good things about Alice In Chains' new album, which I need to get. After the song ended, the DJ comes on says he's looking forward to the new Deftones album and that the new Alice In Chains album is the best of the year. No joke. My roommate's jaw dropped for a second before looking at me and saying he thinks someone loves me or something along those lines. Haha it was an impressive string of coincidences.
And now I've written way more than I intended to and it's about 4:00 am, leaving me with two and a half hours of sleep before I have to get up for work, so wish me luck. The morning is definitely going to suck. Also, please forgive me if there are a bunch of typos or sentences that don't make any sense 'cause I'm too damned tired to bother proofreading. That's all.
