When I was a kid, Rod Stewart was a name that would strike fear into my heart and make me leap to turn the channel on the TV or radio before I was forced to hear one note of whatever crappy ballad or light rock song of his was popular at the time. I was about ten years old when what is still one of my least favorite songs of all time, "Forever Young", was released and aired heavily on both the radio and MTV. I hated it then and I hate it now. A few years later came his dreadfully overplayed cover of Van Morrison's "Have I Told You Lately", in which it sounds like he's getting choked up and about to cry at the end. That was enough to make you want to go punch the first person you see just to get the bad taste out of your mouth. I will not post either of those two songs or videos for reference -- I refuse to -- so you'll have to look them up on your own if you're so inclined.
Despite all of that, Rod Stewart undeniably rocked in his younger years. As hard as it is to believe when you grew up in the era I did, he's one of the best vocalists and frontmen ever to grace rock and roll. First fronting the Jeff Beck Group who's debut album, Truth, was released the same year as that of Led Zeppelin and is considered one of the earliest heavy metal albums and then The Faces, both of whom featured some of the most legendary musicians in rock.
I won't post the 80's and 90's crap, but I will post these vids of a twenty-something Rod Stewart performing with The Faces back in the late 60's/early 70's, a time when they were pretty much THE live act to see. The first is a Temptations cover and the last is a Beatles cover. You'd have to be on crack to not think they do the originals justice and then some.
