Apathy A-Go-Go

More ranting and raving on a topic I'm undereducated on. I don't like getting involved in trends, but all the talk going on with the election coming up has politics on my mind. I don't vote because I don't have faith in the system on the national level. I don't believe either party, let alone the president, has enough power to make any real change and so I don't believe my vote matters. I'm of the mind that the events that take place during a term have very little if anything to do with who our "Commander In Chief" is and everything to do with whatever drives the system itself, which isn't us. I take that back 'cause no matter how hard a pill it is to swallow, we are collectively responsible for letting things get to where they are, if not individually. We just lack the overall will to do anything about it. There's no question in my mind that the system is completely corrupt and does not work for us the way it's supposed to and yet I'm more concerned with what show I'm going to watch next, how to improve my home theater setup and things like that on a regular basis and I think a lot of us are that way. I sure wouldn't want to be the man in charge because I just want to enjoy my free time to the fullest and don't want a bunch of extra responsibility getting in the way, so it's easy to ignore things that are obviously wrong or at least not focus on them. "Someone else will do it", or "let someone else do it" would probably be an appropriate motto for the people in this country because most of us are too comfortable and rely too much on the things we have to look beyond that and want to risk giving it up. It would take a real threat to these things we hold important for us to actually do something significant. It's simple inertia and it makes us easy to manipulate. I'm sure those in power know this and use it regularly, and I'm sure this isn't a new line of thought.

Maybe it would be good to let religious fanatics take over because at least they seem to believe in something strongly enough to organize and mobilize and that might just shake things up enough to break us out of the state we're in and allow us to move forward, making positive change even if it means hard times for a while. I think it's more likely that war on our own soil or a climatic or natural disaster or series thereof devastating enough to force us to change our way of life would be the catalyst. In any case, I have trouble believing significant positive change will occur without something negative happening to trigger it and I selfishly hope it doesn't happen until my time has passed. And then, if or when things have improved, I don't see any good reason to believe we won't end up stuck in a bad place again with sociopaths tending to be the ones who seize power, human nature and all. And history shows us that it's only a matter of time before we go the way of the Romans and every other civilization or corporation, company, person or anything else to ever rise to the top only to eventually fall. What goes up must come down. I just hope it doesn't come down around me.

Oh and it's a popular saying/belief that money makes the world go 'round and money is the root of all evil, but I disagree. Money isn't the problem; we are. Because we all want more and money is simply a means. It exists due to our greed and inability to be satisfied.

Huh, that got negative and pessimistic sounding, but that wasn't my intention. I'm just trying to be realistic. Anyway, just been thinking and felt like ranting I guess. And now off to spend a little time with the family. : )
