I plan to put this behind a cut as soon as I can figure out how to make one with the online updater

Alright. This entry is important. I guess I have to hope that it'll be important because in writing it I will somehow find a clear answer to my question, though, because my usual "can I just get other people to tell me what they think?" approach probably isn't the best one for momentous life decisions. On the other hand, what could be better ( Read more... )

Personally I find relief in the idea that the decision I make for my career doesn't have to be permanent. it takes a whole load of stress off. Do I really like the paleontology? Yeah I do. I dunno if it will be my focus forever though: I could use it to jump into climatology, or isotope geochemistry, or other fields. Even completely unrelated fields, because people these days do more career switching than ever before. Adam's father is an immunologist, and once received a resume from a woman who had gotten her PhD in Botany. A bit of a career change ( ... )

You make a very good point, and thank you, by the way, for commenting. Part of the problem is that while I'm pretty sure I can switch to Sociology or Physics when I'm 45, it would be a damned sight harder to decide to go to Broadway then, and it's probably already too late for Hollywood. Also there's that whole "if I was going to discover anything in physics, legend says I would do it before I turned 30" thing, but that train has probably sailed.

I'm afraid I don't have anything for you on the life advice front. Every time I try to formulate something it tries to twist itself into the "Just suck it up and do something" form, which is never helpful, so I won't waste your time with it.

The lj-cut thing, on the other hand, I am all over.

Here's the thing, sweety. You're doing exactly what you're supposed to be doing. You're searching. You're going to school, exploring, looking for answers, and you will find them, or at least some of them. That's part of what college is for, in my not-so-humble opinion. It's the time in your life where you have more freedom than you did in high school, and in some ways more than you'll have once you leave college. It's the time for searching, for feeling your way. This is the time when you're supposed to be writing nonsense in a journal (if you write one), and sometime, suddenly, you'll realize it's not nonsense anymore (to blatantly steal a movie line ( ... )

Oh, and one more thing... sorry about the flippin' novella up there. I have a tendency to let that stuff just flow, and to not realize until later that I've filled the screen with words. heh.

hmph. Again, I'm trumped in the "less babble, more sense" category by Mr. Burns. Listen to him! He's much better at this talky thing than I am.

One note: my closest friend says he can set his clock for "Darla-splosion Day" based on how stressed out I am. It's pretty sad when blowing stuff up in your reality in favor of something different is so common it has a name, isn't it?

To completely steal from that song a while back, some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't know what they're going to be when they grow up.
